The stage at Perth’s Winthrop Hall was adorned with blue curtains, and a very elegant black Steinways Grand Piano positioned center stage. Then a figure in black suit crossed to thunderous applause from the audience, and Mr Paul Lewis CBE bowed and took his place at the piano. What came next can only be described as breathtaking. Mr Lewis began his performance with a perfect and flawless rendition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Sonata 10 in C Major. A beautiful, mesmerizing piece of music presented skillfully.

Mr Lewis completed his first act with the equally beautiful L’isle Joyeuse (The Isle of Joy) composed by Claude Debussy, again performed with perfection. Debussy and Mozart were very different in their composition styles, however when both framed the delightful music of Francis Poulenc’s Improvisations Pour le Piano (Improvisations for Piano) the mĂ©lange, or fusion, of the three composers was perfect.

The second act of Mr Lewis’ performance was just as beautiful as the first. Mr Lewis opened with more selections from Poulenc’s Improvisation Pour le Piano. At the end of two of the pieces was a lone, solitary note, which on both occasions resulted in a giggle from the audience.

Mozart+ act 2 was concluded by Mozart’s Piano Sonata 14 in C Minor. Another beautiful, flawless performance.

Mr Lewis provided the audience with an encore of a piece from Chopin. Another delightful composition.

Throughout the performance one could not only hear but could also see the passion that Mr Lewis has for classical music as his facial expressions showed all. It is no wonder that he has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, et al. His renditions are simply the most beautiful and superb this author has ever witnessed in person.

In Mr Lewis’ own words he has, for many years, “wanted to spend some time focusing on Mozart’s piano sonatas and have long felt sceptical of the broadly held view that these remarkable works are the poor siblings of his piano concertos”. I must agree with Mr Lewis as the selected sonatas are just as beautiful as the composer’s full concertos.

I had the pleasure of attending the performance with my 6 year old son, who enjoys live theatre and classical music as much as I, and when asked for his thoughts on the performance he summed it up in one solitary word, “Amazing”.

The audience were completely captured by the extreme talent on the stage, and the beautiful music that filled the auditorium, and this author believes that each audience for the remainder of Paul Lewis: Mozart+ Australian tour will be equally bewitched by his talent and presentation.

Perth’s Dark Side: A True Crime Walking Tour Through the City

Perth's True Crime Tour

Taking part in a walking tour is one of the best ways to learn more about a city, whether you’re visiting for the first time or have lived there for years. There’s always something you’ve overlooked, and a good guide can transform familiar streets, buildings and laneways into the setting for stories you never knew were there, lurking in the shadows.

Dark Stories is one of the walking tour businesses bringing those stories to life. They have been running true crime tours and dark theatre productions since 2018, operating in major cities across Australia. Their tours explore the darker side of local history through the retelling of crime, scandal and intrigue.

I joined the Perth True Crime Walking Tour, and found it was an entertaining way to spend my evening. Who doesn’t love a little true crime? The tour focuses on cases from Perth’s past, and as we walked through city streets and laneways, our guide revealed the stories connected to each location.

We meet our guide, Amy, at the Horseshoe Bridge, an easy-to-find landmark for visitors to Perth. The tour is deliberately small, which I think makes for a much better walking experience. Everyone can keep pace with the group, while the smaller numbers mean we can gather around Amy and hear her stories without competing with the noise of the city.

Amy is an engaging storyteller, bringing Perth’s dark history to life with photographs of offenders, victims and locations as they appeared in years gone by. The images add another layer to the stories, making it easier to picture the people and places involved and, occasionally, sending a shiver down my spine.

I knew a few of the stories we encountered, but I hadn’t realised just how many high-profile crimes had taken place around Perth. From murders along the train line to scorned lovers and mafia conflicts, the stories reveal a fascinating side of the city.

The walking itself is very manageable, with the pace more of a leisurely meander than a serious hike. We followed a loop through Perth’s streets before crossing into Northbridge. The route is reasonably flat, which makes it accessible for people with limited mobility, although individual accessibility requirements would be worth checking when booking.

We finish at the Perth Museum Boola Bardip, where we listened to stories of the convicts who built and inhabited the tiny prison. Sitting in what was once its execution grounds while hearing about Perth’s colonial past is an eerie way to finish the tour.

The tour is reasonably priced and offers a fun way to see the city from a different perspective. Whether you’re a visitor wanting to uncover Perth’s history or a local looking for something different to do with friends or on a date, the Perth True Crime Walking Tour by Dark Stories offers an entertaining evening of crime, history and local lore. It starts early enough to leave plenty of time afterwards for dinner nearby, which I found to be a fitting way to round out a dark evening in the city.

Sydney’s Razor Gangs True Crime Tour

If you are an adult true-crime fanatic and love historical detail then the Sydney’s Razor Gang True Crime Tour is for you. In fact it was more of a two-hour theatrical performance as Ryan delivered a high-energy, full blown monologue for the whole time in spite of being a dark and stormy night!

A group of eight met in Darlinghurst and walked through the suburb visiting the crime scene locations and it felt like we were on a live set with the characters brought to life as we travelled through their lives, crimes, fights and murders. First tip, put on walking shoes and be prepared as it is a non-stop and wonderful journey of facts not fiction.

We learnt about the major characters in the infamous Sydney razor gang wars. Ryan informed us how they moved from low crime to being major gang bosses including two ruthless women. Each location had a story to tell including the local art school having previously been the jail with plenty of hangings. We all mused about the students would paint and create and wondering if any of them had seen a ghost or two!

Ryan cleverly wove in and out of the history of each major gang member as they bumped up against the changing police laws and behaviour and fell in and out of favour with each other and their people. There were love affairs, cocaine and lots of blood. He gave us the full-blown background and impact of each player as this small but lethal community exploded and imploded.

The police didn’t escape as different characters including the first female officers came on the scene; a mix of honourable cops and others bordering on the legal side of the law. It was fascinating to find out their history and impact on managing the gangs and trying to bring some §sense of law to the area.

No one escapes in the end and they all died the way they had lived. Many in this time might have become rock stars and some could have legitimised their businesses or made enough money to live quietly but no, they were mad, bad and often sad.

Huge applause for Ryan as in the final moments he gave us the full war story with all gangs meeting in a frenzy of razor blade slashing whilst he was battling a windy storm. It just added to the atmosphere as we stood near a dark and dingy alley with lights flickering, a furious gale blowing and a sense of doom and gloom. Fabulous!

Inspired by a hot flush and a glass (okay
bottle!) of wine, this hilarious, taboo-breaking musical follows four women who meet while shopping. As they swap stories of hormonal heatwaves, memory meltdowns, and midnight sweats, they belt out parodied hits from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s — including I Will Survive, Hot Stuff, What’s Love Got to Do With It, and We Are Family — and discover that menopause isn’t the end, but a bold new beginning, lived with honesty, humour and a new attitude.

Since its 2001 premiere, Menopause The Musical¼ has played to over 17 million women (and brave men) in more than 500 cities and nine languages. In Las Vegas, it’s the longest-running musical in the city’s history, thanks to a record-breaking 17-year run — and counting. Australia’s love affair with the show began in 2005, when it opened at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre. Originally slated for just two months, the season extended again and again, closing after seven months. Since then, the production has played to more than 1.5 million people across 200+ cities and towns nationwide — and holds the title as the longest-running musical ever to play Brisbane.

Produced by SK Entertainment, this new production is brought to life by a creative team led by the multi-award-winning director and choreographer Cameron Mitchell. Orchestrations and Arrangements by Damon Wade, Set Design by Frances Story, Lighting Design by Jasmine Rizk and Costume Design by Christine Mutton.

Menopause The MusicalÂź is more than a night at the theatre — it’s a celebration of resilience, friendship and finding the humour in one of life’s biggest transitions.
