Iota Joins Cast Of Leonard Cohen Anniversary Spectacular

Feature-Cohen Noir: The Beauty, Mystery and Romance of Leonard Cohen

It’s 10 years since the iconic poet-composer-musician Leonard Cohen left this world, but his work looms as large as ever! And – marking the anniversary – Australia’s triple ARIA Award-winning Monsieur Camembert brings their spectacular and acclaimed production COHEN NOIR to Melbourne and Perth, honouring one of the world’s greatest songwriters through a richly textured evening of music, poetry and storytelling.

Joining an all-star cast of singers and musicians for both performances is multi award winning performer, IOTA. He is flanked by Diana Rouvas, Lyn Bowtell, Susie Bishop, Timothy James Bowen (Melbourne), Berlin-based Australian violin virtuoso Daniel Weltlinger and the remarkable Bukhu, whose haunting Mongolian throat singing and horse-hair fiddle add another unforgettable voice to this rich musical landscape.
Plus the formidable choral backing of a superb community choir in each city: Glee West in Melbourne and Swan Harmony Singers in Perth!

Some songs become part of who we are. They accompany us through life’s different seasons, revealing new meanings as we change. Leonard Cohen’s songs are among those rare companions, filled with beauty, longing, tenderness and extraordinary insight into what it means to be human. Created and performed by Australia’s triple ARIA Award-winning Monsieur Camembert, COHEN NOIR is a rare invitation into that remarkable world.

Over the past 20 years, COHEN NOIR has evolved into one of Australia’s most acclaimed live music experiences, earning standing ovations and sold-out performances at the Sydney Opera House, State Theatre, City Recital Hall and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Audiences return not simply to hear these timeless songs again, but to discover something new within them.

“Cohen Noir is brilliant… a confronting, mortifying, exultant celebration of the business of being human.” – John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

An exceptional ensemble of musicians and guest artists explores Cohen’s songs, poetry and prose with imagination, sensitivity and masterful musicianship. Drawing on jazz, tango, Latin, folk, klezmer and cinematic orchestration, the music reveals new colours and perspectives while remaining faithful to the emotional heart of the songs.

Cohen’s own recorded voice, poetry and humour weave gently through the performance, drawing audiences into the world behind the songs and revealing the wisdom, humanity and quiet grace that resonate so deeply.

“Spirited, musically assured, eclectic and downright fun.” – Doug Spencer, ABC Radio National

More than a tribute concert, COHEN NOIR invites audiences to encounter Leonard Cohen’s work anew, discovering fresh colours, deeper meanings and the timeless humanity that continues to resonate a decade after his passing.

“Monsieur Camembert does justice to the emotional, lyrical and melodic intent of the songs while adding a new dimension.” – Tony Hillier, The Weekend Australian

Tony & Gaga: An Opulent Big Band Experience Arrives in Melbourne

Feature-Tony & Gaga: An Opulent Big Band Experience

Big Band brilliance meets Hollywood glamour! BBD Entertainment presents a lavish evening of classic standards, live orchestral sweep and the kind of vocal interplay that made Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s collaboration so beloved. Two Melbourne dates this spring offer audiences the chance to hear the Great American Songbook delivered with warmth, wit and a 20 piece band.

Tony & Gaga: An Opulent Big Band Experience pairs powerhouse vocalist Sarah C with style icon Dom Bagnato for a show built around the songs that defined an era of sophisticated pop. Sarah C, known to Australian audiences from Dancing With The Stars and X Factor, brings vocal depth and presence to every standard, while Bagnato adds charm and stage charisma to match. Together, they recreate the chemistry that made Bennett and Gaga’s duet albums so appealing.

Behind them stands the Mojo Orchestra, a 20 piece ensemble delivering the lush arrangements these songs demand. Strings, brass and rhythm section fill the room with the kind of live orchestral sound that streaming cannot replicate. The setlist draws from the Great American Songbook, the body of classic standards that both Bennett and Gaga championed throughout their celebrated partnership.

The production plays two Melbourne venues this spring. Frankston Arts Centre hosts the first show on Saturday 5 September at 7.30pm, offering a seated theatre setting for audiences in the southern suburbs. A month later, on Friday 9 October at 7.30pm, the show moves to Birds Basement, the intimate jazz room beneath the city where the orchestra and vocalists will be close enough to touch.

Each venue offers a different way into the material. Frankston’s theatre brings scale and sweep; Birds Basement brings proximity and atmosphere. Both promise an evening of polished vocals, a full live band and songs that have never really gone out of style.

Tickets for both performances are on sale now. For an evening of classic standards, vocal chemistry and a 20 piece orchestra in full flight, book your seats at Sarah C Shows.

Les Femmes – A Powerful Love Letter To Music

Les Femmes’ tagline says it all – “Iconic Male Songs – Powerhouse Female Voices”. Indeed, it is their powerful voices and so much more that made their performance at The Grand Electric truly electrifying. The rich soulful voices of the Les Femmes trio are accompanied by the rhythmic twist of hips and sharply succinct dance choreography.

Emma Mylott, Tia Gigliotti and Jacinta Gulisano opened with a strong rendition of Sinatra’s That’s Life, which had the audience immediately cheering. With almost a full house for Sunday’s gig, The Grand Electric was the perfect home for a cabaret style performance. The space inside was not too large, and the stage jutting out with a small runway brought the singers closer to the audience at different times.

Les Femmes continued with iconic songs from the past bearing a Romantic theme. Singing the famous line “You’re just too good to be true”, they sang Frankie Valli’s Can’t Take My Eyes Off You with heart and heavenly harmony. They continued with a medley of beautiful songs such as How Deep is Your Love, When a Man Loves a Woman and Feeling Good (“It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me, oooh, and I’m feeling good” – you know you want to sing along!) These songs highlighted their rich and sensual voices singing in harmony. The high notes were delivered powerfully and sustained with apparent effortless skill but which must have taken countless hours of rehearsal.

There was a touching dedication to Les Femmes’ fathers acknowledging the musical influence on them growing up, with Elton John’s Your Song, The Temptations’ My Girl and Cat Stevens’ Wild World being sung. For this part of the show, the women sat on stools and reminisced, and Jacinta’s dedication of Piano Man to her Grandfather was very sweet. One of my favourite songs was featured during this set, Toto’s Africa. Encouraging audience participation, we sang along and even did a ‘Mexican Wave’ from one side of the theatre to the other and back.

The next segment were songs dedicated to ‘The Players/ The Charmers’ and the mood became funkier, featuring a medley of songs such as My Pony, Justin Timberlake’s Señorita, Stevie Wonder’s Part Time Lover, Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) James Brown’s Get Up, I Feel Like a Sex Machine. The room’s energy changed with the theme and I found myself marvelling at these ladies’ talent from switching from swing and R & B’s soulful songs, to the more modern and funkier songs. The audience witnessed the change and were vocally showing their support, clapping and dancing in their seats.

Les Femmes combined their themes with audience participation. The three singers held a “fun quiz”, asking some male audience members questions to see which category of ‘Good Guy or Charmer’ they fit into. Fortunately they were good sports about this. The women were great hosts, and in-between singing they infused humour throughout their show at the right moments.

After a short interval, Les Femmes returned to the stage and performed their next set, dedicating this part to ‘The Good Guys’ and kicking it off with a fantastic version of Black Box’s Fantasy. I was very happy to hear this one, because my first ever CD was Black Box’s Dreamland! Of course, Barry White’s Can’t Get Enough of Your Love Babe, Bee Gee’s Night Fever and Staying Alive were part of the medley for this theme.

By now, it was astounding hearing how versatile Gulisano, Mylott and Gigliotti’s voice ranges were. There was a mix of songs spanning decades, and the spin they put on these well known and loved songs was impressive.

When one performer took the lead for part of one song, the other two performers supported them with angelic harmony. The three singers had their opportunities to shine and one such highlight was during James Brown’s It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World, and listening to their reaction of cheering and whistling, the audience thought so too.

To end their 2 hour show, the choice of Australian well known songs had everyone standing, dancing and singing. The medley included Daddy Cool’s Eagle Rock, INXS’s Never Tear Me Apart, Darryl Braithwaite’s The Horses, John Farnham’s You’re the Voice and one of my absolute favourite songs, Dragon’s April Sun in Cuba.

At this point, I found myself wondering if there was anything these three singers couldn’t do. They had showcased every genre of music, performed countless iconic male songs spanning decades, and danced with incredible energy and passion. Their performances were an everlasting love letter from them, to the beauty of music. Everyone would have left the theatre singing different songs. Les Femmes is not to be missed!
