While pantomimes aren’t a well-known concept to some, they are a Christmas tradition for many families in the UK. It’s also the one-time audience participation in the theatre that is not only expected but encouraged. Oh no, it’s not, I hear you say. Well, oh yes, it is!

The Irish Theatre Players’ production of The Twelve Days of Christmas takes us to the enchanting village of Old Dimpley Bottom, where the Royal family are planning a grand Festive Ball to bring joy to all the villagers. To mark this splendid occasion, a giant advent calendar with 12 doors is constructed on the Village Green, with one door to be opened each day until Christmas.

However, the festive spirit is threatened when Wizbad, the wicked wizard (Adrian Mills), steals the keys to the advent calendar and scatters them across the globe. Aided by the good Fairy (Anna Sirotkina), the characters embark on an exhilarating race against time, travelling to the world, from South America to Ireland, in their quest to retrieve the missing keys.’

The set got everyone in the Christmas spirit and saw clever use of a single flat interchanged as the residents of Old Dimpley Bottom travelled far and wide in search of the keys to save Christmas. The stage lights would go down, and when they were lit again, we had been transported to a new exotic destination with singing, dancing (yes, of course, some of it Irish) and a range of well-considered props to confirm where we were.

The Twelve Days of Christmas is fun for the whole family. It has the right amount of innuendo to keep the adults laughing, but the kids especially will love it. The audience was clearly well versed in their role, with the expected booing, hissing, and ‘he’s behind you’ happening from the very start.

 

The cast embraced their roles and hammed it up. The traditional pantomime dame, Gertie Gusset (Peter O’Connor), was a crowd favourite, and relatable local council workers Stampit and Clampit (Nathan Holland and Amanda Walker) were appropriately annoying as they provided fines for inappropriate parking of a wheelbarrow and an announcement after the interval that given its Christmas, instead of wheel clamping audience members’ cars, they’d been nice and had them towed.

Having a reasonably large cast, often on stage at the one time, and with children making up half of the ensemble, things could become a bit of a mess but the action was well choreographed and made great use of the space available, sometimes extending out into the crowd.

The costumes were fabulous and plentiful, keeping some of the main characters’ outfits simple but adding accessories such as Queen Cupcake’s headband…you guessed it, a cupcake. Every different country travelled to in search of keys featured costumes to suit, from French berets to leprechaun outfits.

Comedy On The Rocks is the perfect way to spend a few hours for an afternoon of laughs, creativity, and cheeky fun. Held at the delightfully chaotic and cosy Motley Bauhaus, this theatrical drinking game combines quick-witted performances, unpredictable plays, and communal cheers to deliver a boozy comedy experience unlike anything else on the Melbourne independent theatre scene.

The Format: Cheers to Surprise
The premise is simple but ingenious: six short comedy plays, each crafted by talented performers. Every play features three designated “Cheers!” moments that keep the audience on their toes: an action (like an actor jumping), a prop appearance (say, a trusty fry pan), and a line of dialogue (like “Speak of the devil!”). The result? Every time these cues appear, the audience raises their drinks, whoops and sips. It’s participatory theatre at its most playful.

What makes Comedy On The Rocks particularly special is its spontaneity. With a rotating cast and new material for each show, all performances are different. You genuinely don’t know what’s coming next – which, let’s be honest, is half the fun.

The Show: Inventive, Funny, and Just a Bit Tipsy
The short plays showcased a variety of comedic styles, from quick banter to absurd gags, proving the creativity of Melbourne’s emerging theatre scene. While the sketches varied in tone and execution, the overall vibe was fresh, inventive, and energetic. Of particular note were the performances by the show’s organisers and hosts, Cat and Caz, whose impeccable comic timing and natural chemistry made their sketch one of the day’s highlights.

 

The tight runtime – about two hours, including a 20-minute interval – is perfect for keeping the energy high and the drinks flowing without overdoing it. Whether you’re a casual theatre-goer or a comedy lover, the unpredictability ensures something for everyone.

The Venue: Motley Bauhaus – Tight but Delightful
The Motley Bauhaus adds its own charm to the experience. Sure, the theatre seating can feel a little snug, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it. The bar buzzes with pre-show excitement, and the live jazz band playing outside post-performance adds a delightful bonus, creating an authentic festival vibe.

For those who enjoy supporting local and independent talent, Comedy On The Rocks feels like a celebration of the best Melbourne has to offer: creativity, camaraderie, and a generous side of fun.

What is this Production about?

Australian Open is a play about tennis and open relationships. It’s a hilarious ensemble piece that uses witty dialogue to challenge societal norms whilst championing queer culture.

What character are you playing, and what can you share with us about them?

I am understudying the role of Belinda as well as the Assistant Director.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

I first became involved with 7th Floor Theatre through their weekly moved play reading series, Pot Luck Plays, and things evolved from there.

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

I hope it will start conversations around open relationships. I identify as ENM (Ethical Non-Monogomous) which includes open relationships. I’m really excited to be part of a play that asks those kind of questions, and I’ve been enjoying chatting to the cast about it. The ENM world still faces a lot of discrimination.

What’s going to surprise people about this show?

People are going to be surprised just how funny this play is!

About Ellen Hardisty

What do you enjoy most about acting?

I love discovering different parts of myself and different ways of understanding the world that come from immersing myself in a new character. I love sharing stories and building community and asking the big questions and making people laugh.

What productions have you acted in before?

I have toured theatre around Europe – 6 shows in Rep!

What has been your favourite role so far in your career?

Playing Rosencrantz in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead for the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble.

Do you believe talent or training is more important to an actor?

Acting is a mixture of craft and art. The craft of acting takes practice and training. The art of acting takes imagination and inspiration and bravery.

What do you think can make a role challenging?

I love challenging roles where the character’s experience is very different from my own life experience, and the depth of research that goes into these roles.

What do you think makes a performance most believable?

An actor having a thorough understanding and connection to their character, the story, and the world of the play.
