The spectacular Bright Star musical presented by Sport For Jove Theatre Company, in association with Hayes Theatre Co, is a spellbinding must-see. Co-Directed by Miranda Middleton and Damien Ryan, Musical Direction by Alec Steedman and produced by Christopher Tomkinson and Isabella Milkovitsch, this creative team – along with their cast – have created an absolute masterpiece.

The magnificent cast left me in awe of their radiating talent. In the theatre world we talk about “triple-threat” performers who can sing, dance, and act. Well, this sensational cast raised the bar adding instrumental skills into the mix-quadruple threats!

This highly acclaimed production transports audiences to the 1920s and ‘40s in the American South. Steve Martin and Edie Brickell were inspired to write Bright Star after discovering an old newspaper article about the “Iron Mountain Baby” – an incredible true story of a baby’s miraculous survival after being thrown from a moving train inside a suitcase. Rescued and adopted by an elderly couple, this miraculous story sparked a reimagining that became this heartwarming, bittersweet tale.

Now to the music: the score is brilliant-one you’ll want to add to your playlist. The powerful bluegrass songs resonate with heartfelt emotion, striking the audience with every note. Congratulations to the Musical Director, Alec Steedman on an outstanding job of directing this talented cast to deliver an exhilarating performance. The impeccable harmonies and the all-round musicianship of the singers and instrumentalists were absolutely inspirational.

 

 

Hannah McInerney is sensational in the lead role of Alice Murphy. She took my breath away from the opening number with her angelic vocals, rich with Southern warmth. Her playful, engaging acting was both charming and humorous yet deeply moving in the poignant moments. At times, I was wiping away tears; at others, laughing in hysterics. Hannah kept me captivated throughout her intoxicating performance.

Kaya Byrne gave an electric performance as the charismatic Jimmy Ray. Kaya sings, plays guitar and harmonica with utmost professionalism, and conveys his character’s heartbreak and anguish with depth and honesty. Kaya’s emotive performance was deeply impactful, leaving my heart in my throat.

Cameron Bajraktarevic-Hayward is utterly delightful as Billy Cane. Expertly playing the cello during the show, he delivered the role with skill, energy and heart. His agile dance moves and magnetic stage presence enhanced an already brilliant performance.

Deirdre Khoo shines as Lucy, flawlessly showcasing her talents on accordion, vocals, dance and acting. Her show-stopping moves illuminated Shannon Burns’ masterful choreography. Deidre, alongside Jack Green who played the comedic Daryl, brought plenty of laugh-out-loud moments which kept the audience well entertained. Jack Green also played the sincere Daddy Cane, a contrasting character full of emotional depth and sincerity.

Genevieve Goldman, as the comedic relief character Margo,brought dynamic energy to the story. With fabulous comedic timing, striking vocals and impressive acting, Genevieve provided an engaging performance.

As the villainous Mayor, Seán van Doornum was remarkable. Portraying a detestable character convincingly can be difficult, but his superb performance captured the proud, unfeeling, and truly evil nature of the role.

Katrina Retallick and Rupert Reid as Mama and Daddy Murphy were a powerhouse duo. Katrina’s stunning vocals, especially her harmonies with Hannah, were unforgettable. Her raw intensity in the harrowing scenes amplified the emotional impact. Rupert’s portrayal of an uncompromising father, weighed down by regret, was equally striking—his natural, convincing delivery perfectly suited the show’s era.

Bright Star will make you laugh, cry and fall in love with its story and musical score. This impactful production, with its incredible stellar cast, is not to be missed. I am certain you will fall in love with it, just as I have.

‘Come You Spirits’ Theatre Incorporated’s production of Macbeth is being performed in the intimate and engaging space of The Lounge at the Concourse Theatre Chatswood. It creates the perfect atmosphere for delivering a truly personable Shakespearean performance.

There was a lovely welcoming message from the cast and they also concluded the performance with a heartfelt message of thanks. Although the actors were not amplified, they were heard clearly due to their perfected voice projection and the nature of the small space. I really appreciated the clarity, articulation and dramatic delivery, which ensured a well-absorbed performance. Shakespeare can often be difficult to digest, as the script is comprehensive, and sometimes players tend to rush through the complex dialogue. However, this was definitely not the case during this presentation. It was engaging and delivered in a timely, dramatic fashion, which had me – and certainly the entire audience- enthralled. The entire cast of six was of the highest professional caliber and all gave a spectacular performance.

Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were played by Charles Mayer and Jo Bloom, who portrayed a natural connection and chemistry on stage. They both brought great emotional depth in their leading role characters and delivered a solid convincing performance.

Charles Mayer displayed the overly ambitious character of Macbeth with great conviction throughout. He showed passion, ambition and then later portrayed the tortured, battered soul of his character.

Jo Bloom delivered the greatest of sincerity to the ever-goading, ruthlessly ambitious, Lady Macbeth. Jo also doubled as the Second Witch and skillfully transitioned between the two contrasting characters.

 

 

Banquo was played by David Halgren, who gave a haunting and eerie rendition of his character. He also showed great skill in his theatrical movements leaping on and off the table and in his ghost-like manoeuvres.

Ciaran O’Riordan’s performance as Macduff was heartfelt and convincing. He portrayed Macduff with all the passion the character deserves.

I really appreciated the well-projected clarity and dramatic delivery of Willa King’s portrayal of the First Witch. Her
resonating, clear vocal tones were deeply impactful.

The homage to our traditional Aboriginal custodians was beautifully and seamlessly interwoven throughout the performance. Ella Havelka, who beautifully portrays the Third Witch, is an alumnus dancer with the Bangarra Dance Theatre and honoured her heritage as a member of the Wiradjuri people by flawlessly incorporating traditional influenced movements in her portrayal as the Third Witch.

The dimly lit setting created an eerie atmosphere for the supernatural elements, which constantly wove throughout the play.
I was particularly taken with the regal, gothic themed dining room staging, complete with lit candelabras, tablecloths and goblets. Also, the staging for the infamous “Double, double, toil and trouble” witches scene, presented with a smoking cauldron and appropriate props was equally striking.

The costuming was very impressive and gave authenticity to the period. It was brought to my attention that the costuming, sets and props were all predominantly sourced second-hand. This is a credit to the Art Director Letitia Hodgkinson who passionately sourced a suitable array of fabrics and materials. Her actions are most admirable and show a great commitment to environmental sustainability, while maintaining a high standard of creativity and artistic sense.

The musical compositions by Brandon Read, music composer and producer, elevated and intensified the performance. The recorded soundtrack was impactful and creatively accompanied the dramatic themes, providing a more full bodied performance.

I would also like to mention the fantastic work of the Lighting technician Adam Applebaum. He made splendid use of spotlights and coloured lighting to enhance themes and poignant moments as well as amplify the eerie scenes.

‘Come You Spirits’’ presentation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is brilliant and captivating. Their rendition is condensed into a fast paced 90 minute performance centered around six main characters. A highly enjoyable performance with a stupendous professional cast.

I can’t believe that prior to last night I had never heard of CALVIN BERGER: A MUSICAL COMEDY, because boy have I been missing out on something really special!

The fantastic musical is a modernised adaptation of CYRANO DE BERGERAC, a classic play written by Edmond Rostand, and is being proudly showcased at the Civic Playhouse, presented by UpStage and Hyde Entertainment and directed by Amber Curby and Seb Smee.

The story centres around four teenagers struggling through the tumultuous years of High School. They are each grappling with their own insecurities, bringing light to the truth that even those we perceive as being; the prettiest, the smartest, the coolest, all still doubt their self worth at times.

It’s a heartfelt message to all teens to be mindful of others’ feelings and to note that you never really know what inner demons your peers may be battling. Although there are some underlying subtle messages, the musical is incredibly lighthearted and hilarious, reminiscent of a 90s romcom.

All four leads were an absolute standout! Both the acting and vocals of each were nothing short of brilliant. The Vocal Director – Gabrielle Connett has delivered commendable vocal instruction to the talented young cast, who all portrayed great skill in their solos and ensemble harmonies.

Seb Smee, an up and coming superstar of Newcastle and certainly beyond, is the assistant director and producer and also plays the lead character Calvin Berger. His comedic delivery, tiny nuances and vocals are flawless. Seb, you are a young genius and I will be thrilled to attend your future productions. 

The ever-witty and delightfully nerdy best friend of Calvin, Bret, was performed superbly by Zoe Chan. Zoe’s characterisation and comedic dramatic skills were indeed A+ and I really enjoyed her convincing character delivery.

Finlay Page delivered a superb portrayal of the gorgeous and highly sought after Rosanna. Finlay gave great depth to her complex character and also delivered wonderful vocal performances throughout the show. Jude Schiller absolutely nailed the ‘handsome jock’ character, Matt. He displayed superb natural acting and an impressive vocal timbre, range and skill. A highly commendable and impressive performance all round.

The set design was very creative and I was impressed with how effective it was in creating depth and dimension to the small space they had to work with. A special shout out to the fantastic work from the sound and lighting technicians, I appreciated the pleasant sound balance and the ‘wetness’ in the microphone settings.

The Calvin Berger musical has ‘scores’ of laugh out loud hilarious moments (yes, pun intended), and I think the entire audience, myself included, were shocked by the talent and professionalism of these young performers. Calvin Berger is an immensely enjoyable and relatable production particularly appealing to ages 13+ and I urge you to support these incredibly talented young artists and help keep local theatre thriving.

Last night I experienced something absolutely incredible: “The Class of ’85” by the Bach Akademie Australia featuring the divine voices of mezzo-soprano Hannah Fraser and soprano Susannah Lawergren.

The remarkable performance was held within the exquisite grandeur of St James’ Anglican Church Sydney, which was consecrated in February 1824 and named in honour of St James the Great. It is the oldest standing church in Sydney and reminiscent of a bygone era. The walls are adorned with plaques in memory of people from hundreds of years ago. I felt engulfed in the memories and rich history and I couldn’t resist pondering on all the events that might have taken place in the majestic building.

Initially, I was longing for the pipe organs standing before me to come to life but I was quickly comforted by the rare sound of a live harpsichord accompanying the orchestral melodies played by ten immensely talented musicians. One of the amazing violinists, Madeleine Easton, is the Artistic Director and founder of Bach Akademie Australia, she has graced international stages and was even invited to perform at King Charles’ coronation, performing on her 1682 Giovanni Grancino violin.

“The Class of ’85” is a tribute and exploration of four of the world’s most significant composers- Bach and his contemporaries Handel, Rameau, and Scarlatti. It is almost unfathomable that Domenico Scarlatti, George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach were all born in the same year-1685 and only within a few hundred kilometres of each other. These remarkable musicians have continued to shape the world hundreds of years later with their incredible compositions.

But how did three such remarkable musicians, all born in the same year, become so noted in the same Baroque period? Was it that they influenced each other, or urged the other to succeed, or was it a simultaneous opportunity seized to create in the same musical movement? Either way, they are still impacting the world hundreds of years later and their influence on music and the arts has remained overwhelmingly steadfast. They have left behind a legacy that will surely live on indefinitely.

The vocal performances of Hannah Fraser and Susannah Lawergren were absolutely spellbinding. The perfect resonating acoustics in the church added to what I felt was an ethereal experience. My feelings were obviously shared by the entire audience whose chins were arched and heads visibly swaying, rendered overcome with emotion. So much so, that there was a compelling desire to close your eyes as to absorb the music in its entirety.

The entire church was engulfed by the beauty and spectacular experience. A pin drop could be heard. Not a soul spoke or whispered; it was as if a spell had been cast upon the room and only broken by intermittent applause.

I feel so humbled and honoured to have been invited to review this incredible performance: a cultural experience that has surely marked myself and other audience members for life. Thankyou from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to experience your excellence and witness a musical performance of the highest imaginable calibre.
