Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “CATS” is a stunningly colourful and athletic musical that audiences, young and old, thoroughly enjoyed on Sunday evening’s performance.

Upon walking into the theatre, we were greeted by the backdrop of an alley, scattered with fantastical depictions of trash or lost items. Festoon lights were hung around the stage and across one of the bannisters above the audience. Many platforms and footholds were around the stage, which gave the cats many places to enter scenes, hide, and leap from.

While a good portion of the show included basic white wash lighting, flashing lights/strobe, pyrotechnics, and different coloured lighting created the desired effects and were appropriately timed. Costumes and Makeup were stunning and thoughtfully crafted, and I could hardly take my eyes away from the intricate details and grungy aesthetics.

As someone who had not seen CATS in person before, I was unaware of the more interactive aspects of the show. Occasionally, some of the cats would enter the audience via the front two rows. They would play with the strap of someone’s purse, bump paws with audience members or serenade them. It was an interesting way to break the fourth wall and keep people engaged. Those who book their seats close to the stage should be made aware of this ahead of time.

 

 

All dance routines were highly polished and were done to seem effortless. In between routines, each cast member maintained their character by including feline mannerisms in their recline. Dance intervals featuring the White Cat (Claudia Hastings) and Mr Mistoffelees (Tim Haskayne) were especially memorable and very impressive. As well as their poise, apparent professionalism and acrobatics, support from the remainder of the cast really brought each of the performances together seamlessly.

The audience thoroughly enjoyed songs such as “Mr Mistoffelees,” “The Rum Tum Tugger,” “Gus: The Theatre Cat,” “Skimbleshanks, the Railway Cat,” and of course, the much beloved “Memory,” and its reprises. All vocals were fantastic and blended well, with notable mentions to Des Flanagan (Rum Tum Tugger), Jarrod Draper (Munkustrap), Mark Vincent (Old Deuteronomy) and Gabriyel Thomas (Grizabella). It is a highly enjoyable experience to see cast members have fun doing what they do best, committing to their roles in such a way that seems effortless.

From the costumes to the effects, everyone who plays a role in making CATS what it is did a fantastic job, and I highly recommend this production.

The 40th Anniversary Australian tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical CATS opened to thunderous applause and a standing ovation last night at its final destination, the Lyric Theatre, QPAC for a short season until 22 February. The coveted role of Grizabella, the former “glamour cat”, is played by Gabriyel Thomas (“Gabriyel Thomas’s rendition of Memory is so hauntingly beautiful it sends shivers down the spine” – Theatre Thoughts), while audience favourite Todd McKenney plays the dual roles of Bustopher Jones and Asparagus the Theatre Cat (“Todd McKenney has the audience in his paw thanks to his comic timing” – Adelaide Advertiser), and classical performer Mark Vincent returns to the musical theatre stage as Old Deuteronomy, the patriarch of the Jellicle tribe (“Mark Vincent brought sonorous gravitas” – Sydney Morning Herald).

Recently seen as Roxie Hart in the sold-out national tour of Chicago, Lucy Maunder has taken on the role of Jellylorum, while the rebellious cat Rum Tum Tugger is Des Flanagan. WAPPA graduate Jarrod Draper plays Munkustrap, and returning to CATS after many years is Leigh Archer as the motherly character Jennyanydots, also known among the tribe as the “Gumbie Cat”.

Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and set to music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS has been captivating audiences around the globe since it opened at the New London Theatre (now known as the Gillian Lynne) in 1981, where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances, winning both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. Since then, CATS has been presented in over 50 countries, translated into 23 languages and has been seen by over 81 million people world-wide. On Broadway, CATS played for 18 years and won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical.

The musical tells the story of the Jellicle cat tribe. On just one special night of the year, all Jellicle cats meet at the Jellicle Ball where Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, makes the Jellicle choice and announces which of them will go up to “The Heaviside Layer” and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

Murder Incorporated: An Unfailingly Entertaining and Giddy Good Time

Murder Incorporated is a rib-tickling revival from Mayhem Theatre Australia, following the exploits of two newly minted assassins who lied about their criminal credentials to pocket a paycheck, and the hijinks ensuing when their deceit is detected and they are forced to accept an ultimatum.

This fast-paced farce is written and directed by Amanda Harrison, an award-winning comedic playwright, who employs clever wordplay and frequently breaks the fourth wall with meta commentary and intentional production ‘mistakes’, in a true comedy of errors. While light-hearted, this comedy is carefully crafted; I especially enjoy how the show’s pacing and audience’s perspectives are manipulated in creative ways for a heightened, dizzying, almost drunken effect – which is enhanced on my account due to mild oxygen deprivation from laughing so much.

The engaging ensemble cast each make their own colourful contribution; Sean Wilson struts his stuff as Sacha Von Stabbington, a role he reprises from the original production. Wilson has excellent comedic instincts, and posture for parody. Stephanie Collins is a delight as Chad Der Villian, showing fine characterisation and range, as a performer also known for playing ingénue roles in musical theatre. As an aside to the main narrative, Collins gives us a couple of bars of Schubert, which are sensational. Wilson and Collins show nice connection and synchronicity together, with sharply timed delivery and natural interplay.

 

 

Sam Hoepner brings commanding voice, bearing, and some brut as Markus Murder Jr, which lend well to his characters slightly inept villainy, nicely embodying both the sinister and slapstick. In the Swing Role, Dylan Clevens is hilarious, assuming multiple personas with fierce physicality and deft adaptability, while Ridley Paulsen is well utilised as the Stagehand, self-deprecating and wryly humorous, while taking on the very practical role of keeping the ‘splatter zone’ protected for cast and audience alike.

Mention is also due to Gaige Harrison, for his creditable work in stage and tech management.

In conclusion, Murder Incorporated is a successful spoof that comically creates an unpretentious and intoxicating theatre experience. The play’s sensibility is silliness, but it is done in the absolute best way; I do not remember the last time I laughed so much, a response reflected by the audience members around me. While the Pip Theatre Studio’s columns cause minor sightline obstructions, the compact venue was an otherwise effective space that added immediacy and helped to highlight the madcap and chaotic tenor of the tale, which is itself an unfailingly entertaining and giddy good time. Sunnybank Theatre was the perfect venue for the world premiere of Centre Stage – A Variety Spectacular. Produced and directed by the multi-talented William “The Juggler” Piper, the show was expertly emceed by William himself, who not only hosted but also juggled, performed magic, and had the audience laughing and participating throughout. One of the funniest moments was a balloon routine featuring a delightful five-year-old volunteer. William’s strong stage presence and obvious passion for providing up-and-coming performers with opportunities to showcase their talents set the tone for the show.

 

 

Young hip-hopper Tyrese Jok opened the show with a high-energy routine, earning cheers and applause from the appreciative audience. Dancer Macca Cloke and singer Eliza Cullerton brought Broadway to Sunnybank with sequins, soaring high notes, and undeniable flair. Former Australian representatives at the Acrobatic World Championships, Lisa Gardiner and Mia Krone, defied gravity with two spectacular acrobatic routines that had the audience holding its breath more than once.

William conceived the idea for Centre Stage in 2025, and this inaugural performance set a high standard for future productions. By the final curtain, Centre Stage had done exactly what its name promises — giving performers a moment in the spotlight and audiences an afternoon to remember.
