The Rep presents Peter Goers’ excellent version of Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys at the Arts Theatre featuring outstanding performances by Robert Cusenza, Robin Schmelzkopf and Tom Tassone with their best New York accents.

The Sunshine Boys is about the vaudevillian comedy duo Al Lewis (Robin Schmelzkopf) and Willie Clark (Robert Cusenza) who for 43 years performed the act known as The Sunshine Boys. However, 11 years prior Al retired from the act and Willie has been struggling to earn a living in show business since the split even taking work in TV commercials

Willie’s agent is his nephew Ben Silverman (Tom Tassone) who is finding it hard to get Willie any work particularly as his aged uncle battles to remember his lines and names. Ben visits Willie every Wednesday bringing him the latest edition of ‘Variety’, low salt food and cigars. The TV network CBS is planning to produce a history of American comedy and wants the duo to reform to perform one of their classic sketches.

Ben grapples to get the belligerent Willie to agree to the reunion, even with the big fee offered by CBS, but after much argument Willie agrees, and Ben arranges for them to rehearse in Willie’s hotel apartment. Al is dropped at Willie’s apartment by his daughter, who he lives with at her New Jersey house, but their reunion begins cooly then becomes argumentative and their big break reformation becomes in doubt.

First impressions of the production, which opens in Willie’s hotel apartment, sets a high bar with Goers’ first-rate set design especially with the large backdrop of seating in an old theatre, then continues with Laura Doheny’s splendid costumes. These impressions continue as Cusenza and Tassone begin Simon’s impressive script as the humour begins to hit with the audience and the play brilliantly unfolds. Simon’s script is sometimes demanding with its back-and-forth dialog, but all are skilfully handled by the cast especially Cusenza, Schmelzkopf and Tassone.

With its long history from the original Broadway production in 1972 to the 1975 feature film with Walter Matthau and George Burns, in his Oscar winning role, then a Woody Allen film in 1997 and even a version of the play on the West End starring Danny DeVito in 2012, The Sunshine Boys is a classic and well-loved play. This version does justice to the play’s long history and Peter Goers, Assistant Director/Co-stage Manager Brian Wellington, the superb cast and crew deserve high praise for this exemplary production.

Adelaide’s True Crime Tour

Review: Adelaide’s True Crime Tour

Meeting outside the Adelaide Railway Station, our very engaging and knowledgeable tour guide, Sarah, led us on a 90-minute tour around the CBD walking to the actual scenes of nine notorious local crimes.

The tour begins at the Railway Station with a fascinating crime dating back to the building’s construction in the 1920s, before moving along North Terrace to Government House for one of the oldest stories featured on the tour.

From there, we made our way through familiar Adelaide landmarks including Rundle Mall, Hindmarsh Square and Grenfell Street. It is fascinating to discover the darker history hidden behind places that thousands of people pass every day, often without any idea of the dramatic events that once occurred there.

At the Mall’s Balls, officially called The Spheres as Sarah pointed out, we heard the tragic story of a crime that occurred in the area in the early twentieth century, including an eerie detail about the victim that is best left for Sarah to reveal.

The tour also moves into more recent history, including a shocking murder connected with Hindmarsh Square, before continuing through the city for several other stories involving Adelaide characters and crimes from different periods.

One of the strengths of the tour is the variety of cases covered. Some are relatively well known, while others reveal extraordinary episodes from Adelaide’s past that many locals may never have encountered.

The tour culminates around Gouger Street with the engrossing story of John Balaban, one of Adelaide’s most notorious murderers, and the dramatic circumstances surrounding his eventual arrest.

The tour is a gentle walk suitable for most fitness levels, with plenty of opportunities for resting on public seats if needed. It takes place mostly over flat ground that is readily traversable by wheelchairs. As the tour operates through public areas of the CBD, there is naturally also some variability in public interaction along the way.

Adelaide’s True Crime Tour provides a very interesting insight into the notorious historic happenings hidden behind what are often considered the quiet streets of Adelaide. Sarah was an engaging and knowledgeable guide, and the tour is highly recommended for visitors to Adelaide and locals alike.

Review: Jesus Christ Superstar – Therry Theatre

Therry Theatre has produced a joyous and excellent version of Jesus Christ Superstar receiving a standing ovation on the opening night adding to their outstanding history of superb musical productions – the whole season is sold out but beg, borrow or steal a ticket if you can!

Arguably Jesus Christ Superstar is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s best musical/rock opera and the third they had written together, but not being able to find financial backing they initially were forced to release it as a concept album in 1970 which featured Murray Head, Ian Gillian and Yvonne Elliman. After the success of the album, it debuted on Broadway in 1971 then it ran for over eight years in its West End production holding the record for the longest running musical until it was overtaken by Cats in 1989. It has also travelled the world including highly successful Australian versions and was revived in the West End this year. If the Therry Theatre felt any pressure from this huge past success, they shouldn’t have because they have done an impressive job of the material.

Well past the point of worrying about spoilers of this story, after the Overture, Act 1 begins with Judas (Daniel Hamilton) concerned about followers of Jesus (Nicholas Munday) getting out of hand and threatening the establishment with the song ‘Heaven on Their Minds’. The apostles ask Jesus about his plans, but he tells them not to worry with ‘What’s the Buzz’. Judas reproaches Jesus about his relationship with Mary (Rebecca Pynor) ‘Strange Thing, Mystifying’. Caiaphas (Chris Coulter) and Annas (Parisya Mosel) and the High Priests plot Jesus’ downfall with ‘This Jesus Must Die’. This leads to one of the best songs of the musical/rock opera of ‘Everything’s Alright’. Then as Act 1 progresses another highlight of ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’ is wonderfully performed by Pynor.

Act 2 leads through Judas’s betrayal of Jesus, his trial then an absolutely brilliant version of ‘King Herod’s Song’ with Herod (Toby Strudwicke) and his courtiers dressed as clowns and tap dancing. The act then moves through to a glorious version of ‘Superstar’ and a respectfully handled crucifixion.

The set design by Ben Todd and the construction crew have produced a very useful and versatile space which easily switches from outdoor meeting places to indoor palaces. The Musical Director, Matthew Rumley and the band are to be commended for a great performance, if there were any missed notes they went unnoticed. Rebeka Stonelaitken’s choreography fits the production perfectly as well as the mix of old and new costumes.

Ben Todd’s direction has led to a magnificent production. In the leads, Hamilton, Munday and Pynor are stellar along with the rest of the spectacular cast.

As a testament to what audiences knew Therry Theatre would produce with this production of Jesus Christ Superstar, the whole season was sold out well before the opening night.

Review: Emily Granger Solo Harp Album Launch Tour – 13 June 2026 UKARIA Cultural Centre

With the huge windows of the UKARIA Cultural Centre which look over the Centre’s beautifully sculptured garden onto the picturesque landscape of the Mount Barker Summit as background, Emily Granger delighted the audience with an angelic program of music from her stunning new album for ABC Classic, ‘A Thing of Beauty’.

Growing up in Kansas City she began learning to play the harp at age 12. Now Australian based, she has performed recitals in Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center appearing with the Chicago, Sydney, and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. Amongst many, many other things, in 2023 she was appointed Principal Harp with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. She is also on the faculty at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and a member of Ensemble Q. In 2021, she released her first solo album, “In Transit” which was a “Featured Album” on ABC Classic and 2MBS Fine Music Sydney. She followed this up with her second album, “Something Like This,” with flautist Sally Walker in 2023.

Granger explained that the new album began to come together after she commissioned a piece for harp from South Australian composer Hillary Kleining which was entitled “A Thing of Beauty”, and after hearing this piece, it became clear what the new album would be and how it would sound.

The program by all Australian women composers, included newly commissioned brilliant works from Alice Chance, South Australian Anne Cawrse, as well as Hillary Kleinig’s work. Older works from the new album were performed, including the heavenly “Karoola Seasons” by Christina Sonnermann based on four haiku by Hilary Burden. The encore was Deborah Henson Conant’s piece “The Nightingale” which appears on Granger’s album “In Transit”.
