The Rep presents a masterfully executed traditional melodrama with Adrift In New York that requires the usual audience participation and is a thoroughly entertaining night at the Arts Theatre.

This style of melodrama emerged in France in the early nineteenth century and rapidly spread throughout the world becoming the favourite form of theatrical performances for the following century. A great number of plays were produced in this genre containing the staples of a love interest, moral conflicts, exaggerated acting in a fast-paced plot with music and happy conclusions. The audience is required to aah and ooh or boo and cheer and sing to the familiar songs if they want.

This story is set in the 1890’s and begins in the Weston family’s farmhouse where Aunt Sarah Weston (Jude Hines) and Martha Weston (Abigail Papps) are discussing the arrival of a letter for Nellie Weston (TJ Baker) from the villain Francis “Desperate” Desmond (Dylan Haar). Silas Weston (Russel Ford), Martha and Nellie’s father, announces that the wealthy Mr. Willoughby has been murdered and robbed. Nellie enters and it is discovered that Desmond has offered to take Nellie to New York to make her a great singer. The hero Jack Merriwell (LA Foale) arrives then Desmond and as the events unfold Desmond’s plot to steal the love of Nellie and to take over the farm which he believes has underground oil is revealed. The twists begin as the battle between good and bad engages.

 

 

The second act is set in a Bowery music hall then the conclusion in the third act is back at the farmhouse. The audience is superbly entertained at the start and end of each act with vaudeville sets by the wonderful chorus, including the hilarious balloon dance. There is also a segment where the audience can sing the classics, “Give My Regards to Broadway”, “A Bicycle Built for Two”, “Down by the Sea” and others.

Director Rose Vallen’s experience comes to the fore in this excellent production containing all the elements of a successful melodrama as the cast move seamlessly around the stage extracting the mandatory audience participation. The set design is minimal but effective. The music from the band, Sandi McMenamin and Rowan Dennis, is perfectly performed and holds the show together.

The cast is outstanding, Jude Hines expertise shines as she both masterfully handles the role of Aunt Sarah and guides the audience in eliciting the required responses to the hero and the villain. Newcomer Abigail Papps, in only her second production, has a first-rate grasp on the necessary exuberance required for a melodrama performance sparkling in the role of Martha. TJ Baker and LA Foale are similarly excellent, and Dylan Haar is terrifically dastardly as the villain. The rest of the cast and chorus are also marvellous, especially the scene stealing Penni Hamilton-Smith.

While a traditional melodrama may not be to everyone’s taste this production of Adrift in New York executes the genre expertly and is a great fun night for those who want to boo the villain and cheer the hero and sing to old favourites.

Therry Theatre have ‘hit the jackpot’ with their latest production of Come From Away!

It is not so much a musical as an experience in compassion, simply but powerfully done.

Come From Away takes place during the days following 11th September 2001, when 38 planes carrying 7,000 air passengers were diverted to the town of Gander in Newfoundland. This small town, with a population of just 11,000, opened its doors to passengers from all over the world, providing shelter, food, and most importantly, kindness.

It is an amalgamation of hundreds of real-life stories from the people of Gander and those stranded there during the events of 9/11.

The creators, Irene Sankoff and David Hein, visited Newfoundland on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 to meet the locals and passengers who experienced this first-hand. These interviews and stories became the foundation of the musical, turning it into a genuine celebration of the kindness that emerged in those challenging days.

Therry Theatre and respected director David Sinclair have risen to the task of such a complex show and had the audience ‘on their feet’ at the conclusion of opening night. While the musical is based in a unit set with trees (Mark Rogers), some tables, chairs, and the orchestra lurking in the sides of the stage, it is the multiple characters and the ensemble (or ‘family’) nature of the piece that makes it challenging.

Sinclair knows the Arts Theatre stage (with its notorious sight lines) and has used every centimetre available to its best advantage. His characters are ‘real’ and we identify with their stories. His vision had many of the audience in tears at the conclusion of the piece.

 

 

He is ably assisted by Associate Director and Choreographer Linda Williams whose choreography is clever, and drives the piece along, particularly the opening and closing numbers.

Musical Director Peter Johns’ band hits all the right notes and includes the little heard bodhran (an Irish frame drum). Johns also plays the piano accordion and keyboards, no mean feat!

Lighting plays an important role in any musical and Mark Oakley’s lighting matches the emotions of each scene. There were a few late cues but these will disappear as the production continues. Allpro Audios’ sound adds clarity to the balance of singers and band.

In an ensemble (or family) production each cast member is of vital importance and it would be remiss of me not to name everyone –

Trevor Anderson – (Kevin J and a brilliant portrayal of Ali) gives the performance of a lifetime alternating a gay boyfriend with a Muslim Master Chef.

Kate Anolak – (Beulah and others) give her character depth with her compassionate performance. Her scenes with Hannah are heart breaking.

Michael Denholm – (Nick and others) adds a touch of comedy and romance as a frustrated Englishman who befriends and eventually marries Michelle Nightingale – (Diane and others). Watching their romance develop is a highlight.

Dee Farnell – (Beverley and others) shines as the pilot of the plane and its passengers that are the focus of the musical. She nails every scene, every note and is a standout. Her ‘Me and the Sky’ is a joy!

David Gauci – (Claude and others) as the Mayor of Gander is a lesson in acting, especially when he changes characters, literally at the ‘drop of a hat’.

Josh Kerr – (Oz and others) is an audience favourite, particularly his Italian character complete with long flowing hair!

Brady Lloyd – (Kevin T and others) adds a tender touch as one of the two ‘Kevins’ whose relationship breaks up over the Gander tradition of ‘kissing the fish’, or perhaps it was destined to breakup anyway?

Claire McEvoy – (Bonnie and others) gives a touching portrayal of the ‘keeper’ of the animals on the flight. Her last scene is tear-jerking.

Eloise Quinn-Valentine – (Janice and others) adds depth to the villagers and the passengers on the plane.

Lisa Simonetti – (Hannah and others) gives us a portrayal that any mother can identify with. Her ‘I am Here” is beautifully and emotionally sung.

Stephen Tongun – (Bob and others) – gives us an important viewpoint of the way people of colour are sometimes till treated in our society.

The cast also includes Shelley Crooks, Daniel Hamilton, Dominic Hodges, Michelle Tan, Katie Packer and who are not only swings but villagers as well.

Come From Away is an emotional roller coaster that is moving from start to finish, and adds vital dimension to 9/11 and the lives it affected. Bravo Therry Theatre for a superb evening!

NOW Productions continue to demonstrate their commitment to developing the next generation of theatre stars—both on stage and behind the scenes! This time, they took on a brand-new challenge a full-blown Musical Revue. Thoroughly entertaining and a fantastic way to spend an evening watching the young cast do what they love.

What a brilliant way to let young performers and tech crews shine by giving them the creative freedom to bring some of the most iconic musicals to life. With such a selection of incredible musicals to choose from, it must’ve been a challenge to narrow it down, the selection allowed for a mix of large ensemble numbers and solo performances, which gave those with more experience and/or confidence, the opportunity to showcase their talents, whilst making it a safe and enjoyable show for those that are perhaps just stepping out.

Split into two acts featuring four musicals each, the show was the result of months of hard work. The show was put together in a relatively short intense rehearsal period, with rehearsals lasting little over a month, demonstrating the commitment and hard work to execute such an outstanding show.

The cast was a fantastic mix of ages and experience levels, and their energy was absolutely contagious! Everyone gave it their all, and the enthusiasm was undeniable. There were some standout performances, of course, but every single performer brought something special to the stage. With just a little more refinement in mic work and vocal blending, those already impressive group numbers will be even stronger in the future.

 

The costumes and props were simple yet effective, and you could tell the cast was having an absolute blast stepping into such a variety of roles. The show was cleverly structured so that each “Item” featured a selection of songs from a particular musical, with every performer taking on multiple roles throughout the night.

Act I kicked things off with numbers from Matilda the Musical, The Pirates of Penzance, Dear Evan Hansen, and Mary Poppins.

Act II brought even more magic with Come From Away, The Sound of Music, Into the Woods, and Les Misérables. And oh, that finale—One Day More from Les Misérables was breathtaking, showcasing the sheer talent and passion of this group. It was a goosebumps-inducing, heart-soaring moment!

So often, curtain calls feel like an afterthought, but not here. The cast came out in their respective musical groups, each with a uniquely choreographed moment that gave the audience a final glimpse of the show’s incredible range. It was such a clever way to ensure that all cast members were given their moment to receive applause.

With effective lighting, a well-planned (and quick-changing!) set, and a cast that clearly loved every second of being on stage, this Musical Revue was an absolute triumph. Bravo to all involved.
