Classical music can be a polarising genre; but for those who say they don’t like classical, what about the scores that bring your favourite movies to life? The music that makes you tear up, or keeps you on the edge of your seat during the unfolding action on the silver screen? That tune you were humming the whole way out of the cinema…that’s classical!

On arrival at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre’s Riverside Theatre, two Aston Martins in the foyer bring a feeling of glamour and excitement as we await the start of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra’s (WASO) Spectre in Concert. It was nice to see lots of people in their best Bond attire, men in tuxedos and ladies in beautiful gowns.

Rather than the usual printed programs, WASO staff hand out pocket size flyers with a QR code for you to view a digital program with a full list of instruments and the musicians you’re about to see on stage, as well as some info about the composer.

From the moment the Orchestra begins to play that classic James Bond theme, you know you’re in for a treat. Conductor Jessica Gethin brings just the right amount of energy to her pivotal role. It could be easy to get distracted by the musicians below the screen and miss that signature 007 action.

Daniel Craig returns in Spectre as a cryptic message from James Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover the existence of a sinister organisation named Spectre. With a new threat dawning, Bond learns the terrible truth about the author of all his pain in his most recent missions. Even having seen the film before, I was looking forward to experiencing it in a more immersive way.

At times I found myself so caught up in the film I would forget the Orchestra was there, but I also loved being able to connect the instruments with certain sounds in the film and watch the short, sharp movements of the string section that have such an impact on certain scenes.

An intermission halfway through the film gave us time to grab a quick drink and another chance to get a photo with one of the Aston Martins, now feeling well and truly immersed in the world of Bond. A girl can dream right?

There’s nothing quite like hearing movie music brought to life by a live Orchestra. Whether you’re a movie buff looking for a fun night out with friends, or hoping to impress someone on a date night, you can’t go wrong with a WASO at the Movies event. As conductor Jessica Gethin says before the concert; it’s a shame we can’t all have WASO in our living rooms when we’re watching a movie, this is truly an experience.

In March, WASO will present Jurassic Park in concert, and I’ll definitely be back.

While you won’t leave feeling shaken, you’ll definitely be stirred by the full force of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of WA returns for its second major production of 2024. Straying from the traditional G&S its name suggests, it presents Cole Porter’s musical comedy Kiss Me, Kate.

Based on the book by Sam and Bella Spewack, Kiss Me, Kate is a show within a show; passions run high as former spouses feud onstage and off during a musical staging of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The egotistical leading man, director, and producer Fred Graham (Ian Lawrance) are reunited with his ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi (Hayley Parker), when the two are brought together to star opposite each other as Petruchio and Katherine in a new adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew.

 

While their barbed and battling relationship puts the entire company on edge, the show’s supporting actress, Lois (Taylor Westland), finds out that her gambling actor boyfriend, Bill (Calen Simpson), has racked up an enormous debt and is hiding out at the theatre to evade the collection by local mobsters.

It’s great to see local groups stage musicals that are well known for their large overseas productions, including the recent West End stage show and, of course, Broadway. The millennials in attendance will be familiar with the themes and characters of The Taming of The Shrew, thanks to 1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You.

Opening night at The University of Western Australia’s Dolphin Theatre was well attended and felt like the show had started as soon as you entered the foyer with a news kid (Ashlee Graveson) handing out flyers for that evening’s performance of The Taming of the Shrew. Two menacing gangsters (Samuel Farr and Tracey Myhill) also paced the foyer on the hunt for those with outstanding IOUs to be paid, adding a bit of fun while we waited.

Upon entering the auditorium, it was hard not to be excited to see the Orchestra front and centre rather than tucked away in the pit. However, if you were sat in the first row or two, it did mean they were eye level, so it was easy to get caught up in watching the musicians and not the action on stage.

The simple set and the inventive use of several elements in different ways, including spinning doors around to create the inside of dressing rooms, made for quick set changes. Keeping the set simple also came in handy for times when the entire cast was on stage, which had the potential to feel cluttered. I would have loved to have seen all of the performers in some scenes; however, there was a bit of blocking from those front and centre.

 

The four leads, Hayley Parker, Ian Lawrance, Taylor Westland, and Calen Simpson, delivered strong vocal performances and were supported by a talented ensemble. At times in the first half, the microphones had either not yet been switched on or could have been turned up more as dialogue was drowned out by the wonderful music. The same can be said for supporting cast members who didn’t have the luxury of microphones.

Well done to the costume team, as dressing a cast of this size can be challenging. I loved the details, right down to the shoe buckles strapped on—very clever.

With Cole Porter’s music and lyrics, it was hard not to keep your toe tapping all the way home. Even the next afternoon, I can’t get “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” out of my head. The cast is clearly having a great time performing this show, which is contagious for the audience.

Neil Simon’s Tony Award and Pulitzer prize-winning comedy Lost in Yonkers is an absolute delight.

Presented by the Roxy Lane Theatre in Maylands, which provides a warm, community theatre welcome from the moment you step through the door. This is clearly a group that enjoys what it does and works hard to put on a good show.

Directed by Karin Staflund, Lost in Yonkers centres on brothers Arty (Daniel Keenan) and Jay (Toby Shepherd), who are sent to live with their grandmother (Sarah House) and Aunt Bella (Seren Healy) in the summer of 1942 while their father goes away to work off a debt he owes to a loan shark.

The prickly Grandma Kurnitz is estranged from her son Eddie (Zane Alexander) and his boys. However, she begrudgingly agrees to take Arty and Jay in at Bella’s insistence and makes it clear this will be no holiday as they’re forced to work in her shop downstairs.

Throw in an uncle who is a local gangster (Geoff Miethe) and Aunt Gert (Julia Webster), who is so frightened of her mother that she struggles to breathe; you can tell it’s going to be a long summer for Arty and Jay.

The cast’s youngest member, Daniel Keenan, steals the show as Arty. With an extensive number of lines to remember and maturity beyond his years, he brings the right amount of humour and warmth to his role. Seren Healy’s portrayal of childlike Bella is both hilarious and heartbreaking as a young woman stuck between her learning difficulties and wanting a life and family of her own.

The cast’s accents were fabulous, and the clever use of the time between scene changes with train sound effects and lighting, while you could already hear the hum of the local train in the background, added to the experience.

The set was well done and made great use of the space given. At times, a sofa bed was front and centre. There were also a number of costume changes for each character, all of which suited the characters to a tee.

With nine performances to go, and if opening night is anything to go by, this is one local production you don’t want to miss.
