Emily McKendry is a multi-talented director, actor and playwright originally from Taree in NSW. Her first two plays, “The Haunting” and “Murder by Invitation” were very well received. Emily co-founded Odyssey Theatre in 2023 alongside Rebecca Smith and Caitlin Addinell. Today we take the time to meet Emily, writer and director of “Once Upon A Grimm Night”, an immersive storytelling escape room experience currently being performed in Sydney.

About Emily McKendry

What’s your favourite fairy tale from childhood? Why?

It’d have to be Cinderella. I used to love the Disney film with the little mice and their corn, then was a bit shocked when I read the Brothers Grimm version: naaaasty. The live action remake is right up there with my favourite comfort films.

Which character from Once Upon a Grimm Night is most similar in personality to the actor/actress who plays them, and how?

I’d have to say Jared as The Narrator and myself as The Witch. Originally, I had thought that I would play the role of The Narrator but I always like to hold open auditions because you never know who will walk through the doors. We’d asked Jared to prepare for The Grimm but when he came in he’d prepared for The Narrator instead. His take on this wonderfully cabaret manic style Narrator inspired me to totally rewrite the character for him. As for The Witch – she’s socially anxious and prefers cats and crosswords to people – I did not set out to write myself but here we are.

What makes your show different from other interactive experiences?

I think the various types of interactivity blended within the one show whilst still maintaining a strong narrative structure. Most of the show is in fact scripted narrative, then on top we’ve got audience improvisation, escape room puzzles, and interactive potion making.

Why did you decide to perform your theatre experience at Old Government House?

You just can’t beat the immersive nature of an actual heritage location. We could try and replicate it somewhere else but it would cost a pretty penny and still never achieve the same ambience. One of my favourite parts of the show is when the audience enter The Witch’s lair – the gasps and audible appreciation of the setting give me little bursts of joy every time.

Do you have any funny or interesting stories of how people reacted during the last season of your show?

How long do you have? Audience interaction means that no two shows are the same. Unfortunately, a lot of them reveal spoilers for the show but The Witch scene always gets some hilarious audience responses.

There is a section where The Narrator asks the audience to consider their futures. One show Jared walked up to a lady and joked that he saw a lot of cats in hers, then with absolute glee she ripped her jacket open and revealed a T-shirt that was printed with the faces of all her 10+ cats. We couldn’t have written that better if we’d tried.

I know you’ve written 2 plays in the past. What inspired you to write this storyline in particular?

I used to write and be a Theatre Production Manager for Dark Stories Theatre, and a few years ago they got approached to create a production in a winery for a winter festival. It didn’t end up happening because there just wasn’t enough time to create it, but I got inspired by the idea of winter and harvest. Traditionally what would you do at that time of year? You’d gather around a fire and tell stories. BOOM; Grimm was born.

If there was any magical object you could bring into this Earth realm from Ever After…what would it be?

I’ve got to go with a classic – a magic wand. I grew up on Harry Potter and desperately wanting to be a witch and not a muggle. I’ve got my bibbity bobbity boo and levi-o-sa down pat.

Is there a sequel in the pipeline so we can see the adventures The Witch and Grimm Volkov get up to next?

You know, so many people have asked me that! I did leave the play open ended on purpose purely because I love the stories that linger with you and make you consider different possibilities. When writing the ending I’ll confess I created a rough outline of their future adventures but as for a sequel, who knows? Never say never.

The Edit

Buckle up for a wild ride into the zany underbelly of reality TV with Gabrielle Scawthorn’s latest show, The Edit at Belvoir 25a. This show promises a rollercoaster of laughs, thrills, and yes, even some binge-eating chicken wings!

About The Edit by Gabrielle Scawthorn at Belvoir 25a

What is this Production about?

The production is about the wild world of reality Television. The truly absurd and terrifying contestants and producers and all the mental things they do to try to make us binge watch.

What character are you playing, and what can you share with us about them?

I play a character called Jess. She’s working on a reality TV show called “Match or Snatch”. Just like the Bachelor or Love Island, this show uses a team of experts to pair up contestants with their perfect match, but the catch is, contestants have to figure out who their perfect match in the Mansion is. The incredible Iolanthe plays Nia, a beautiful young contestant on the show.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

Well, firstly, I fell in love with the script. I laughed and cried reading it and had so many questions. And then the team who are making this show are amazing, it’s a group of people who I’ve had theatre crushes on for years, so I’m thrilled to finally be working with them.

What sort of person is going to love this show?

If you love reality television, you will love this show.
If you hate reality television, you will love this show.
If you love celebrities or love to hate them, you’ll love this show.
If you like funny, fast, thrilling theatre, you will love this show.
If you love to see two women binge eat chicken wings, you will love this show.

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

Gabrielle Scawthorn’s script brings in her own experience with being on reality TV at seventeen (crazy) AND she’s also done so much research as part of her lauded podcast “Back from Reality” where she interviewed former reality television contestants about their experiences on reality TV and being in the limelight and also what it’s like to come out of these shows and back to your life. So she’s crafted something with all the insider gossip! All the shit you never hear about, behind the NDAs, behind the cameras. The underbelly of reality TV.

Who has the best costume?

Definitely, Iolanthe’s character “Nia”, she’s so stylish and her fits are sexy and ****y. Jess is basic in comparison.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

This is the last 25a show at Downstairs Belvoir for some time! After years of housing some of the best independent theatre shows, 25A is making space for Griffin Theatre in 2026. It’s an end of an era! Dom Mercer has programmed the best new theatre makers in this country, and the shows are totally unlike anything you see anywhere else, and they ALWAYS SELL OUT! So don’t sleep on tickets. $25 is THE cheapest theatre ticket in Sydney. CRIMINAL… or is it?

Meet The Performer – Tomas Clifford

Tomas Clifford

Hold onto your hats, folks! Today, we had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with the inimitable Tomas Clifford to chat about his latest musical-cabaret extravaganza, “Tomas Clifford Got Stood Up.” Fresh off successful runs in Perth, Tomas is ready to make his mark at the Melbourne Fringe Festival and beyond. Get ready for a unique blend of humour, music, and heartfelt storytelling.

About Tomas Clifford

What do you enjoy most about acting?

I love connecting to a live audience just like you have a gossip session with your friend over a coffee (or wine) – making everyone in the room feel like they’re the only person being told the story is the aim for me, because it’s that personal connection with the performer than I as an audience member love about cabaret and live performance.

What productions have you acted in before?

Tomas Clifford Got Stood Up has already had two festival runs in Perth, and we’re very excited to announce that this upcoming Melbourne Fringe Season marks the beginning of a national tour of the show (with more dates to be announced for 2026).

Do you want to work in film, live theatre or both?

As a composer, I would love to work on projects across all different media formats – movies, tv, you name it. My heart, however, will always lie in theatre/live entertainment composition, be in the form of a musical or an original cabaret. As a performer, I’m super open to opportunities that may come my way. I’ve never fully imagined myself as a screen actor, but I certainly wouldn’t say “no” – and stranger things have happened.

What strategies do you use to overcome stage fright or nerves before a performance?

I honestly believe that the best strategy to overcome nerves are 1) extreme preparation building up to the performance and having the fullest of confidence that you know what you’re doing; and 2) being ready to throw all that preparation away and respond to what you’re being given by the audience in the moment. It’s that balance of type-a organisation and type-b carelessness that make me more excited than nervous for a performance.

How do you maintain your physical and emotional health while working on demanding projects?

The three s’s: sleep, steam, and silence.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

My original musical-cabaret Tomas Clifford Got Stood Up will be playing in Melbourne from the 1/10 – 5/10 as a part of this years Melbourne Fringe Festival!

Where can patrons purchase tickets to this production?

About The Production – The Bridge

The Bridge

Today, we had the pleasure of catching up with the vibrant and talented cast of The Bridge. This inventive production dives into the dynamic world of the Aussie music scene, bridging the gap between the raw, grunge era of the 1990s and the flashy, digital age of today.

About The Bridge

What is this Production about?

THE BRIDGE is about the Aussie music scene in the 1990s and now, told through the experience of Amber, a grunge force-of-nature who was “too loud” and “too much” when she broke out, and is unexpectedly thrust back into the spotlight, thirty or so years later, when her most personal song goes viral… for all the wrong reasons.

If the culprit, TikTok darling Alyssa, is anything to go off, the ‘biz might look different but it’s the same old wolf (just in a very pink sheep’s clothing). But both women are immovable objects, and their collision course is well and truly set… and both will have to reckon with what the other means for their place in the world.

The Bridge is about the choices we make in a world that’s determined to misunderstand us, and how we can both push back against the systems that shape us, or get lost in the rapids… but ultimately, it’s about how MUSIC transcends, regardless of our differences.

What character are you playing, and what can you share with us about them?

I’m playing “Alyssa”, who is… a lot of fun to perform. She’s a TikTok tragic, impossibly obsessed with the colour pink, incredibly determined, but let’s just say… not so well-suited to a life outside her bedroom (just yet). I think she encapsulates a lot of what’s awesome about her generation – but she’s definitely a liiiittle vulnerable to some criticism, too.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

The Bridge is this awesome, chaotic collision of the “old” and “new” worlds of the music industry – so, good old fashioned live music combined with the fast paced, sometimes boggling world of the internet – and we are well and truly bringing that to life on-stage with a blend of digital and live-performance elements. It’s going to be different to any other show you’ve seen, and different to any other show we’ve all been a part of bringing to life…

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

Myself and other co-writers Sunny Grace and Richie Black are all complete music nerds; our tastes converge around Aussie riot rock and a deep appreciation for the bad-ass trail-blazing women who brought truth and righteous rage to the world. I think we were all excited by the idea of writing something for the theatre that could really capture what Aussie’s really love about live-music… and as a musician myself, I was really excited about what that might end up looking like.

I’m also really inspired by my friends’ styles and tastes as writers and I wanted to be a part of creating something together; I’d never co-written for theatre before so it was an awesome experiment in how we can combine our voices, as three writers from three different generations (Zillenial, Millenial and Gen X), to not just talk the talk about intergenerational conversations but WALK THE WALK!

What sort of person is going to love this show?

Anyone who votes religiously in the Triple J Hottest 100.

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

They’ll no doubt be thinking a lot about wigs, but also maybe speculating about the more human parts that their fave musicians might not show in the public arena.

What’s going to surprise people about this show?

I think the audience is constantly going to be thinking, holy shit what’s going to happen next, because the show is such a rollercoaster of energy.

Call someone out by name: who must come see this production?

Ella Hooper, Myf Warhurst, Yumi Stynes… we salute you. We request your attendance.

Who in the show is most like their character?

I really hope no one in the cast thinks it’s me.

Who’s the least?

Everyone (thankfully, in most cases).

Where can patrons purchase tickets to this production?

The Bridge is showing now to the 13th of September. To book tickets to The Bridge, please visit https://www.kingsxtheatre.com/the-bridge.

Thank you so much for sharing a glimpse of The Bridge with us! Best of luck with the upcoming show; it sounds like an unforgettable mix of nostalgia and new-age flair.
