The Twelfth Night Theatre in Bowen Hills is packed out for A Very Naughty Christmas, an evening of festive filth and perfect end-of-year leer, courtesy of Woodward Productions. Billed as Australia’s longest running adults-only Christmas show, mixing stand-up, sketches, powerhouse vocals and dancing you don’t want you Mum to see, AVNC prides itself as a loud, proud and gloriously unholy comedy-concert-cabaret mashup, and a must see for merry mischief.

The concept is clever and perennially popular, now entering its 9th year of production; AVNC parodies favourite Christmas numbers, borrowing musically from popular culture while also comically satirizing more topical and serious issues; Because Santa is a foreigner with a beard and headdress, he may need to be detained at Christmas Island this festive season in “Santa Won’t Be Welcome Here”. “The Snowflakes are Ruining Christmas” is another highlight, the ode of a Sky News Australia watching ‘Trad Dad’, bemoaning social progress and inclusivity to the detriment of his bigoted and entitled world views. There is also an enjoyable skit where an Olympic Games bid for the North Pole is mooted, before running into predictable (and somewhat familiar!) logistical concerns.

The standard and versatility of the Cast is very high, each singing and dancing and many taking on distinct characters; They all blend beautifully together with dynamic chemistry and charisma. Highlights include Steve Hirst as Santa, bringing cheeky cheer and everyman likability, even though we are in the end slightly concerned for Santa’s missing sack! Sam Ward is perhaps my favourite individual vocalist, with a smooth jazzy croon and striking presence on stage, while the female singing trio (I believe they were Nina Carcione, Olivia Horne and Aurélie Roque) harmonised beautifully and looked just as great. Lara Trevor stood out among the dancers, with mesmerising rhythm and remarkable flexibility, with Anthony Craig, Lachlan Greenland and Croft Phillips commendably completing the talented Cast.

The Live Band are another first-rate feature, effortlessly elevating the atmosphere and tone of the evening.

So much work goes into this type of a show, and enormous credit is due to the entire team of creatives, led by Director/Choreographer Daniel Venz, with special mention also to the work of Skit Writer and Composer of Original Songs, Matt Semple. Great comedy is easy to watch but very hard to create; Judging by the opening night crowd’s response, AVNC delivers like Santa Claus on Christmas eve. The show is as full of surprises as it is double entendre, and the Cast are equal parts fearless and shameless. As the name suggests, this isn’t A Slightly Naughty Christmas; But if you are prone to blushes, don’t worry – red is a very festive hue. AVNC is an irreverent, rude and slightly nude cabaret- that promises tremendous fun.

Plied and Prejudice

The court was certainly aflutter during Plied and Prejudice, a racy adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice.

Featuring five unhinged actors playing 20 characters, this action-packed romp enthrals from start to finish. The night unravels from the moment the characters strut out onto the catwalk stage, running between the audience, perfect for posturing with outrageous innuendo.

Bridget Jones’s Diary fans will relish the parallels to Pride and Prejudice (minus the knickers, huge or otherwise), and Bridgerton, Little Britain, and Rick Astley aficionados will be in for a debauched treat. It’s probably just as well Jane Austen is no longer around to witness this tequila-soaked production.

Written by Matthew Semple with original direction by Dash Kruck, the swoons are aplenty thanks to director Ian Good and producer Alex Woodward from Woodward Productions. The lusty performance is hardly surprising given Mr Darcy’s soaked white shirt and the amount skulled by Elizabeth Bennett whenever there was a mention of tea, or the bell rang.

Certain cast members will be indisposed each night to keep it fresh, as if it could get any livelier. The production stars Ayesha Gibson (Elizabeth Bennet and others), Patrick Gandin (Darcy and others), Rp van der Westhuizen (Collins, Bingley, Wickham and others), Jess Lally (Catherine de Bourgh and others), Lucy Goodrick (Jane Bennet and others) Hanna Harvey (Swing) and Oliver Clare (Swing).

Set and costume designer Penny Challen portrayed Regency-ridiculousness with tongue-in-cheek aplomb. The actors’ performance, with all the grace of a frenetic ballet dancer, can be attributed to the movement direction of Dan Venz. A word of warning, this is not for the conservative or under-18-year-olds, you will be outraged while secretly longing to be invited to the after-party. Pray to Great Britain that you aren’t chosen to become part of the performance.

After sell-out shows in Brisbane and London, the Perth season has already been extended to 28th September 2025. No doubt, the extra tickets will sell quickly to the uninitiated, intrigued by the scandalous reports, and repeat theatre-goers craving more unruly decorum.

So, dust off your fascinators and get dressed (or undressed) for the booziest ball of the century at Pemberley. Mr Darcy’s shirt isn’t the only thing that will be drenched by the end.

Plied and Prejudice runs from 18th July to 28th September at Downstairs at The Maj. If you’re lucky to be invited as Lady Catherine De Bourgh’s honoured guest, tickets are $100 for a plush throne and prosecco. Front-row aristocrat tickets are $70, middle-class cabaret-style seating is $60 and the paupers on high stools will be flogged $30.

A Very Naughty Christmas – Naughty and Nice

A Very Naughty Christmas - F

Woodward Productions’ A Very Naughty Christmas does exactly what it says on the tin and does it exceedingly well. Both hilarious and heartwarming, this raunchy Christmas cabaret had me laughing non-stop for the full eighty-minute run time.

It’s sparkly, sexy, spectacular, side-splitting, and, of course, very naughty. Get ready to hear your favourite carols as you’ve never heard them before, alongside some dazzling dancing, burlesque, skits and stand-up. But be warned, as executive producer Alex Woodward said: “Melbourne audiences are going straight on Santa’s naughty list.

The show features a cast of eight exceptionally talented performers, each bringing unique and distinctive flair to the performance. Not only are they all hilarious, but they are also captivating. Each of them has incredible vocal talent, impressive dance ability, and a knack for comedy. I can’t stress enough just how remarkable they are.

This show is comedic gold, but it’s also a showcase of some of Melbourne’s finest talent. There’s something magical and hilarious about seeing your favourite Christmas tunes performed by this stellar cast, accompanied by the naughtiest lyrics and just a little bit of nudity.

Aside from being incredibly gifted performers, this cast also knows how to engage an audience. Their energy and excitement were contagious – I felt like I was a part of the show (and owing to the amount of audience involvement, at one point, I really was!).

The atmosphere was welcoming and inviting, and the set and costumes were bright and colourful. Every aspect of the show contributed to that classic and cozy Christmas feeling with a cheeky twist. Indeed, carolling has never been sexier.

Not for the easily offended, this Christmas comedy spectacular is a must-see. A Very Naughty Christmas is running at the Alex Theatre until December 23rd. Do yourself a favour and grab a ticket. You might end up on the naughty list, but trust me, it’s worth it.
