Robot Song is a 10/10 unicorn. It’s a lean, hilarious and genuinely heartfelt piece of theatre, where every element is perfectly placed and the magic sneaks up on you. There is no fat in this show. Nothing extraneous. It is deliberate, thoughtful and perfectly crafted, a tight hour that moves at a cracking pace and still finds room for your heart to keep up.

I first saw Robot Song years ago and it hit me just as hard this time at Theatre Works as it did when I saw it in regional Victoria. I feel like that is the mark of a work built on universal truth and authenticity.

Created by Jolyon James (writer, director and designer), Robot Song takes the lazy “robotic” stereotype often slapped onto autistic people and flips it into something far more honest and generous. In James’ own words the show challenges those misconceptions, asks how we define ourselves and centres creativity as a way through when language fails.

At the centre of the story is Adeline Hunter as Juniper May, giving a stellar performance that is funny, raw and completely believable, like you are watching a real kid think in real time. Phillip McInnes as Dad nails the paternal warmth and the messy, relatable effort of trying to get it right more often than you get it wrong. Michelle Doyle, performer-musician, is a quiet force, moving between presence as Mum and musicianship in a way that makes the whole room feel held.

 

 

The music, composed and directed by Nathan Gilkes, is simple but perfectly formed, built to keep the lyrics clear and centred while still giving the singers space to fly. And fly they did. Each performer showcased their vocal skills brilliantly but Adeline Hunter stole the show vocally with a powerhouse voice that left the audience cheering.

The theatrical language is a joy too: a show-within-a-show (and sometimes another show within that). It never feels confusing as we switch between worlds, just lovingly guided. Puppetry, projection, movement and live tech blend so seamlessly, you stop clocking the mechanics of brilliant theatre-making and find yourself genuinely immersed inside the story.

The design, once again, highlights the versatility of Theatre Works. It sits within the space as though it was custom built for the venue. The set looks casual, complete with found objects strewn everywhere, but everything is precisely chosen and positioned, especially around the oversized dumpster centrepiece which is somehow both realistic and quietly magical. Set construction is credited to Tom Eeles at JT Custom Builds, and you can feel the intelligence in every centimetre of it. The lighting (with original lighting design by Paul Lim) and the sound design deserve their own standing ovation. They are detailed, sculpted and so apparently effortless that you only realise afterwards how much work must be underneath.

I brought my 17-year-old daughter to this performance and she loved it as much as I did, as much as the younger kids in the audience did too. That “everyone gets something” kind of magic is rare. Think Bluey energy: warm, clever, deeply inclusive, with big lessons delivered gently with wit and kindness. This show made me laugh, cry and I loved every moment of it. Don’t miss it.

Lead Cast Announced For Waitress Australian Premiere

Producer John Frost for Crossroads Live today announced the stellar cast for the Australian Premiere of Broadway’s smash-hit musical WAITRESS, which will light up Her Majesty’s Theatre Melbourne from 1 May, and the Sydney Lyric Theatre from 1 August. Leading the cast as Jenna will be Natalie Bassingthwaighte (Chicago, Shirley Valentine), while Gabriyel Thomas (Cats, Sister Act) and Mackenzie Dunn (Grease, Annie) play Becky and Dawn, Jenna’s coworkers at the diner. Charismatic star of stage and screen Rob Mills (& Juliet, Wicked) will play Dr Pomatter, and legendary actor John Waters (The Woman in Black, Play School) will be Joe, the owner of the diner.

One of Australia’s most popular leading ladies of stage and screen, Natalie Bassingthwaighte will play Jenna, an unhappily married waitress in a small US town. Natalie’s music career has seen her achieve acclaim as one of only twenty Australian solo female artists to reach Number One on the ARIA Album Charts with her solo album, 1000 STARS. She has enjoyed international success as front woman of The Rogue Traders, achieving multi-platinum sales across two albums, as well as two APRA nominations, an MTV award win and seven ARIA nominations. Most recently lauded for her performance on stage in the title role of last year’s Australian tour of Shirley Valentine, Natalie has created many memorable characters on stage including Roxie in Chicago, Mary-Jane in Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, Sandy in Grease and Florence Vassy in Chess. Her work on television includes the original host of So You Think You Can Dance, judge on The X Factor, and competing alongside her sister Mel on The Amazing Race.

Direct from her acclaimed performance as Grizabella in the national tour of Cats, the role of Becky, the irascible waitress with a wicked sense of humour, will be played by Gabriyel Thomas. Gabriyel’s other credits included Michelle and sometimes the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier in the Australian tour of Sister Act, The Sound of Music, Ragtime and the Australian and US tours of Hairspray.

Most recently seen on stage as Lily St Regis in the Australian tour of Annie, Mackenzie Dunn will be Dawn, the eccentric youngest waitress at the diner. Mackenzie has also played Rizzo in Grease, Penny Pingleton in Hairspray, Squeaky Fromme in Assassins, Francine in Jersey Boys, Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime, Bubba in Summer of the Seventeenth Doll and understudied and performed the role of Princess Fiona in the Australian tour of Shrek.

Charming stage and screen star Rob Mills will be playing Dr Pomatter, Jenna’s endearing but neurotic gynaecologist. Rob has had celebrated roles in musicals including & Juliet, Wicked, Hairspray, Ghost, Jesus Christ Superstar and Grease, and on screen in Neighbours, Winners and Losers, Dancing With The Stars and the 2025 season of The Amazing Race Australia: Celebrity Edition.

As Joe, the curmudgeonly diner owner who has a soft spot for Jenna, will be stage icon John Waters. With a career spanning over 50 years, John is well known for lead roles in the film Breaker Morant and the television series Rush, All the Rivers Run, Rake and his 20-year run on Play School. His prolific stage work includes Hair, Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar in the 1970s, through to the musicals The Rocky Horror Show, They’re Playing Our Song opposite Jackie Weaver, The Sound of Music opposite Lisa McCune and most recently the thrilling play The Woman in Black.

Producers John Frost for Crossroads Live and Opera Australia are delighted to announce that Broadway musical ANASTASIA will premiere in Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre at QPAC from September 2026. The crowd-favourite musical made its Australian debut in December at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre wowing audiences and critics alike. Tickets will go on pre-sale for the Brisbane season to those who have signed up to the waitlist on Monday 2 March and to the general public from Friday 6 March.

Time Out Melbourne called the musical a “charming theatre experience” that was “destined to deliver theatrical magic” while The Music said it was “a theatrical spectacle that dazzles on every front and will leave you spellbound” and Beat Magazine said that the musical’s “dazzling Australian premiere is rich with powerful performances.”

The cast includes Queensland’s own Georgina Hopson as Anya, Robert Tripolino as charming con artist Dmitry, Joshua Robson in the role of antagonist Gleb, Rodney Dobson as Vlad, the much-loved Rhonda Burchmore as Countess Lily and theatre icon Nancye Hayes AM in the role of the Dowager Empress.

“As a very proud Queenslander, I just can’t wait to share the magic of ANASTASIA with Brisbane audiences. It’s a beautiful story to be immersed in, accompanied by iconic songs that invoke a nostalgic feeling of our shared childhood including Once Upon a December and Journey to the Past,” said Georgina Hopson, who trained at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. “ANASTASIA’s message is the importance of home, love and family, and to me Queensland represents all of this so I can’t wait to share the story with local audiences,” she added.

The ensemble cast members include Sophia Bae, Elliot Baker, Billy Bourchier, Nicholas Cunningham, Davis Giotopoulos Moore, Todd Goddard, Stephanie Kurlow, Keian Langdon, Bella Minniti, Nathan Stafford, Alexis Van Maanen, Annie Wilson, Deone Zanotto, and Andrea Zappacosta with the Swings team featuring Manon Gunderson-Briggs, Iosefa Laga’aia, Nathan Pinnell and Emma Russell.

Inspired by the mysterious tale of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov’s rumoured escape in the dawning days of the Russian Revolution, and the 1997 Oscar nominated animated film of the same name, ANASTASIA has been brought to life on the stage by the Tony Award-winning creative team of Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens.

ANASTASIA is a lavish musical for all ages, transporting audiences from the twilight years of the Imperial rule to the euphoria and exuberance of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman named Anya sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by an army officer determined to silence her, she enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.

Directed by Tony Award winning director Darko Tresnjak, ANASTASIA premiered on Broadway in March 2017. It received a Tony Award nomination for Best Costume Design in a Musical and won more than 15 major international awards including Best Musical awards in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain.

The book for ANASTASIA was written by the late five time Tony Award winning writer Terrence McNally, whose credits include Love! Valour! Compassion!, Master Class, Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime.

Music and lyrics for ANASTASIA were written by the renowned writing team of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens who have been referred to as “one of the greatest songwriting teams in Broadway history.” (Chicago Tribune).

VIVA Vicious by VIVA Melbourne is the adults-only experience you need to book for your next date night.

Secretly housed in a beautiful Cabaret room at the top of a warehouse at 64 Sutton Street, North Melbourne, VIVA Vicious and its troupe of amazing singers, dancers and, acrobats, creatively and tastefully capture “The art of suggestion” or, “The art of almost.”

While Marketing ‘Mandate’ Male Revue on King Street in the 90’s, I was safe to visit friends in the adult clubs next door. I noticed the gentlemen who came to see the female strippers were much more well-behaved than the Hen’s night ladies who came to see the males. It was a fun and bawdy time, and absolutely everything was on show.

This is not that.

Viva is the kind of nightclub show couples enjoyed in the 1950’s – dinner, drinks, dancing and, a floor show – only more naughty for the naughties.

Professionally and stylishly choreographed by Karlee Porritt, with a beautifully lit stage and interesting projections, Viva Vicious is both suggestive and sensational.

The show includes aerial acrobatics, popular music, beautiful costumes and humorous skits – males dressed as Nurses and French maids – dappling in virtual reality.

True to the mid-1800’s Burlesque shows, the VIVA men were often the comic relief between the provocative female performers. In this show, they also dance, play the saxophone and, assist in the aerial acrobatics.

Just like with ‘Moulin Rouge’ or ‘Crazy Horse’ in Paris, every performer is extremely fit and stunningly beautiful. Crazy Horse boasts of their show, “an ode to feminine beauty, combining eroticism and sophistication.” Viva in Melbourne certainly lives up to this boast.

 

The female body is a beautiful thing.

While enjoying VIVA Vicious, I remembered an old life-drawing teacher once told me, “What’s suggested is often more attractive than what is obvious.”

Unlike Moulin Rouge, where you’re practically sitting on the lap of the person next to you, the Viva Cabaret room is plush and comfortable. Couples and friends are seated in pairs at club tables on different levels, so every view is intimate, stimulating and, energetic. Even the opulent rest-rooms were exquisite!

Each Cabaret table is big enough to place two side plates and two sumptuous cocktails the Viva wait staff bring to you shortly after you’ve ordered. We tried the Chicken Karaage and the Salmon Sashimi. Both were visually pleasing, fresh and delicious.

The first performer on stage set the scene in a long sequined evening dress singing a Whitney Houston ballad, with precision. Now we find we’re in for Cabaret and, Burlesque.

She was followed by a Britney Spears number with many dancers in full-body tiger print outfits, topless.

A songstress mixes things up, singing a 50’s number sporting her Marilyn Monroe style dress.

There’s a Western number backed by the classic Ennio Morricone soundtrack, and plenty of ‘Honey Birdette’ designed lingerie.

Michael Jackson’s ‘Dirty Diana’ and Annie Lennox’s Sweet dreams perfectly back a sensual bed scene.

Things are spicy but never confronting.

Throughout, there were a few aerial acrobat spots, one with a spiral from the ceiling, another with silks, always with such skill. Loved the sexy Medusa track.

During a most enjoyable two-hour show, there are two Intermissions where you can go to the bar or, partake in a caviar bump and a vodka shot with a passing sexy server, to prepare you for the next show.

The troupe encourage you to hit the dance floor after the show.

Viva means “Long Live” in Italian and Spanish. I think we’ll return.
