About The Edit by Gabrielle Scawthorn at Belvoir 25a

What is this Production about?

The production is about the wild world of reality Television. The truly absurd and terrifying contestants and producers and all the mental things they do to try to make us binge watch.

What character are you playing, and what can you share with us about them?

I play a character called Jess. She’s working on a reality TV show called “Match or Snatch”. Just like the Bachelor or Love Island, this show uses a team of experts to pair up contestants with their perfect match, but the catch is, contestants have to figure out who their perfect match in the Mansion is. The incredible Iolanthe plays Nia, a beautiful young contestant on the show.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

Well, firstly, I fell in love with the script. I laughed and cried reading it and had so many questions. And then the team who are making this show are amazing, it’s a group of people who I’ve had theatre crushes on for years, so I’m thrilled to finally be working with them.

What sort of person is going to love this show?

If you love reality television, you will love this show.
If you hate reality television, you will love this show.
If you love celebrities or love to hate them, you’ll love this show.
If you like funny, fast, thrilling theatre, you will love this show.
If you love to see two women binge eat chicken wings, you will love this show.

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

Gabrielle Scawthorn’s script brings in her own experience with being on reality TV at seventeen (crazy) AND she’s also done so much research as part of her lauded podcast “Back from Reality” where she interviewed former reality television contestants about their experiences on reality TV and being in the limelight and also what it’s like to come out of these shows and back to your life. So she’s crafted something with all the insider gossip! All the shit you never hear about, behind the NDAs, behind the cameras. The underbelly of reality TV.

Who has the best costume?

Definitely, Iolanthe’s character “Nia”, she’s so stylish and her fits are sexy and ****y. Jess is basic in comparison.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

This is the last 25a show at Downstairs Belvoir for some time! After years of housing some of the best independent theatre shows, 25A is making space for Griffin Theatre in 2026. It’s an end of an era! Dom Mercer has programmed the best new theatre makers in this country, and the shows are totally unlike anything you see anywhere else, and they ALWAYS SELL OUT! So don’t sleep on tickets. $25 is THE cheapest theatre ticket in Sydney. CRIMINAL… or is it?

About The Production – The Bridge

The Bridge

Today, we had the pleasure of catching up with the vibrant and talented cast of The Bridge. This inventive production dives into the dynamic world of the Aussie music scene, bridging the gap between the raw, grunge era of the 1990s and the flashy, digital age of today.

About The Bridge

What is this Production about?

THE BRIDGE is about the Aussie music scene in the 1990s and now, told through the experience of Amber, a grunge force-of-nature who was “too loud” and “too much” when she broke out, and is unexpectedly thrust back into the spotlight, thirty or so years later, when her most personal song goes viral… for all the wrong reasons.

If the culprit, TikTok darling Alyssa, is anything to go off, the ‘biz might look different but it’s the same old wolf (just in a very pink sheep’s clothing). But both women are immovable objects, and their collision course is well and truly set… and both will have to reckon with what the other means for their place in the world.

The Bridge is about the choices we make in a world that’s determined to misunderstand us, and how we can both push back against the systems that shape us, or get lost in the rapids… but ultimately, it’s about how MUSIC transcends, regardless of our differences.

What character are you playing, and what can you share with us about them?

I’m playing “Alyssa”, who is… a lot of fun to perform. She’s a TikTok tragic, impossibly obsessed with the colour pink, incredibly determined, but let’s just say… not so well-suited to a life outside her bedroom (just yet). I think she encapsulates a lot of what’s awesome about her generation – but she’s definitely a liiiittle vulnerable to some criticism, too.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

The Bridge is this awesome, chaotic collision of the “old” and “new” worlds of the music industry – so, good old fashioned live music combined with the fast paced, sometimes boggling world of the internet – and we are well and truly bringing that to life on-stage with a blend of digital and live-performance elements. It’s going to be different to any other show you’ve seen, and different to any other show we’ve all been a part of bringing to life…

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

Myself and other co-writers Sunny Grace and Richie Black are all complete music nerds; our tastes converge around Aussie riot rock and a deep appreciation for the bad-ass trail-blazing women who brought truth and righteous rage to the world. I think we were all excited by the idea of writing something for the theatre that could really capture what Aussie’s really love about live-music… and as a musician myself, I was really excited about what that might end up looking like.

I’m also really inspired by my friends’ styles and tastes as writers and I wanted to be a part of creating something together; I’d never co-written for theatre before so it was an awesome experiment in how we can combine our voices, as three writers from three different generations (Zillenial, Millenial and Gen X), to not just talk the talk about intergenerational conversations but WALK THE WALK!

What sort of person is going to love this show?

Anyone who votes religiously in the Triple J Hottest 100.

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

They’ll no doubt be thinking a lot about wigs, but also maybe speculating about the more human parts that their fave musicians might not show in the public arena.

What’s going to surprise people about this show?

I think the audience is constantly going to be thinking, holy shit what’s going to happen next, because the show is such a rollercoaster of energy.

Call someone out by name: who must come see this production?

Ella Hooper, Myf Warhurst, Yumi Stynes… we salute you. We request your attendance.

Who in the show is most like their character?

I really hope no one in the cast thinks it’s me.

Who’s the least?

Everyone (thankfully, in most cases).

Where can patrons purchase tickets to this production?

The Bridge is showing now to the 13th of September. To book tickets to The Bridge, please visit https://www.kingsxtheatre.com/the-bridge.

Thank you so much for sharing a glimpse of The Bridge with us! Best of luck with the upcoming show; it sounds like an unforgettable mix of nostalgia and new-age flair.

About The Show – Romeo & Juliet/Macbeth Double Bill

Romeo & Juliet/Macbeth Double Bill

G’day everyone! Today, we’re thrilled to have a yarn with the lead actor from the imaginative Romeo & Juliet/Macbeth Double Bill. These unique 90-minute musical adaptations shed a fresh light on the Bard’s timeless tales. Hang tight as we dive into this creative fusion and hear all about the joys and challenges of bringing such an intriguing performance to life.

About Romeo & Juliet/Macbeth Double Bill

What is this Production about?

This production is a double bill of 90-minute musical versions of Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, with Australasian Indie-Folk and Bluegrass/Americana music, respectively. Music, Mischief, and Magic—It’s Shakespeare like you’ve never seen it.

What character are you playing, and what can you share with us about them?

The cast for both shows is the same, so all actors play roles across both shows. In this iteration of these shows, I play Romeo and Lady Macbeth. It’s been a lot of fun revisiting Romeo after a year away from the show, rediscovering all the little intricacies that made that character feel so special to me. Playing a gender-swapped Lady Macbeth was a daunting challenge, but one that has been so rewarding.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

Bringing Shakespeare into a more modern context without losing what makes it such a timeless and special sort of show is always a challenge, especially when you throw musical elements into the mix, but I think we handle the material with just the right amount of revelry and rebellion all at once.

What sort of person is going to love this show?

We like to think that our shows are for everyone, whether you like the bard’s work or not, but it is always a particularly special moment when someone who before coming along would have said they categorically hated Shakespeare tells us after the show that they finally feel like they get why people love his works so much. So I would say, in particular, people who don’t like Shakespeare will love our Shakespeare.

Call someone out by name: who must come see this production?

I want to see any of the Australian musicians whose songs we use come along to the show. It’s been so special to get to connect with some of the Kiwi artists we’ve used music from, and I’d love to get that connection across the ditch as well! So that means I want to see: the band Dragon, the band Jet, The Dreggs, Divinyls, and Kyle Lionheart at the show!

Where can patrons purchase tickets to this production?

The production runs from 27 May – 1 June at Chapel Off Chapel. To book tickets to the Romeo & Juliet/Macbeth Double Bill, please visit https://chapeloffchapel.com.au/show/the-barden-party-shakespeare-double-bill/.

Thank you so much for sharing your insights and excitement for the Romeo & Juliet/Macbeth Double Bill. Wishing you all the best for the upcoming performances – may they be filled with all the music, mischief, and magic that makes Shakespeare unforgettable! Break a leg!
