Monty Python’s Spamalot Opens This Week!

Feature-Monty Python’s SPAMALOT

This week Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre is set to welcome the three time Broadway Tony award winning musical Monty Python’s SPAMALOT with preview performance beginning on Wednesday September 16 ahead of the red carpet opening night on Saturday, September 19. The Tony Award-winning Best Musical has recently extended its Melbourne run through October 11, following extraordinary ticket sales and demand. Heading to the stage for the Melbourne season is an exceptionally talented and diverse cast, headlined by Australian screen and television favorite Stephen Curry, stepping into the royal role of King Arthur in his musical theatre debut.

Joining Stephen as the captivating Lady of the Lake for Melbourne is vocal powerhouse Jaz Flowers, marking her triumphant and long-awaited return to the stage after ten years.

Perth standout Jamie Rolton reprises Patsy alongside Stephen Curry’s King Arthur. They are joined by rising comedian Nick White (Man of Many Characters), NIDA graduate Gareth Isaac (Sir Robin), WAAPA graduate Jesse Vasiliadas (Sir Lancelot), and Perth alumni Noah Skape (Sir Galahad) and Ethan Jones (Sir Bedevere). The ensemble includes Grace Williams, Emily Huynh, Danielle Gibson, Jacinda Tsakalos, Will Basson, Jack Coyne, Dominique Hamilton, Regan Walker and Ethan Churchill.

Directed and produced by Drew Anthony, this spectacular new staging of the beloved classic brings all the film’s iconic humor to life. The production features an innovative high-definition digital set that seamlessly presents recognisable scenes from the original movie. With book and lyrics by Eric Idle and a celebrated score composed by John Du Prez and Idle, this riotous retelling follows King Arthur and his loyal Knights. Affectionately parodying standard musical theatre tropes, the clever production delivers a dynamic combination of soaring Broadway-style vocals, tap-dancing knights, and flying cows.

Monty Python’s SPAMALOT has remained a cornerstone of modern musical theatre ever since its 2005 Broadway premiere, where it earned 14 Tony Award nominations and won three, including Best Musical. Celebrated for its sharp absurdity and anarchic comedic tone, the show boasts a legendary score filled with memorable classics like “Find Your Grail,” “The Song That Goes Like This,” and “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”.

Following its Melbourne season, the production will move to Sydney for performances at the Sydney Event Centre (The Star Sydney) from October 15–18, before heading to Western Sydney’s Coliseum Theatre from October 22–25, 2026. The staging features choreography by Jamie & Suzi Rolton alongside vocal direction by Rainer Pollard.

Melbourne tickets are available now through www.ticketmaster.com.au. For the Sydney Event Centre (The Star Sydney), booking is accessible via Ticketmaster, and tickets for the Sydney Coliseum Theatre can be purchased through www.ticketek.com.au

Marian Street Community Arts Centre Petition Presented To Parliament Today.

Feature-Marian Street Arts Centre

With the next state election approaching, the community is urging the NSW Government to help deliver a $30 million cultural and performing arts centre after 13 years of waiting.

The NSW Government is being asked to partner with Ku-ring-gai Council and the community to rebuild the old Marian Street Theatre and deliver a permanent cultural and performing arts centre for Sydney’s North Shore.

The project offers the Minns Government a visible, community-backed opportunity to deliver lasting infrastructure before the election — supporting children, young people, performers, creatives, schools and audiences.

Closed since 2013, Marian Street Theatre has nurtured generations of performers and audiences. Its community has continued campaigning despite the loss of its building.

Last month, the community raised $100,000 within a week, securing the Development Application indefinitely and keeping the project alive while funding is assembled.

Ku-ring-gai Council is expected to contribute half the project cost, once government and philanthropic partners contribute the balance.

Council’s financial planning identifies a proposed $30 million multi-use arts venue incorporating performance and rehearsal spaces.

The proposal is evolving into a community cultural and performing arts centre — not simply a hall.

It could provide performance and rehearsal spaces, creative development, classes and workshops for children and young people, school partnerships, accessible cultural participation, and a home for community and professional productions.

Jessica Blaxland Ashby, founding member of the Marian St Action Board, delivered a community petition to the NSW Parliament with 5827 signatures, 50% more than a similar petition in 2018.

The campaign thanks local State MP Matt Cross for supporting the vision and the community petition.

But after 13 years of waiting, the community says the time for government action has arrived.

“In 2026 people need more than housing and transport. They need places to participate, create, connect and belong,” said Jessica Blaxland Ashby.

“With an election approaching, every party will want to demonstrate what it can deliver. This project has strong community backing, a clear plan and a council commitment to fund half the cost once government and philanthropic partners contribute the balance.

“The community has already put its own money behind this project. Council needs to contribute half the cost. We are asking the Minns Government to partner with us and help turn this long-standing vision into a real, visible achievement.”

The campaign says Marian Street Arts Centre would give the government an opportunity to deliver practical cultural infrastructure and create a legacy for future generations.

“Bradfield helped build the rail network that still defines Sydney, and his contribution has never been forgotten,” said Tony Bates, Acting Chair of the MarianSt Action Board.

“We need leaders prepared to invest in the infrastructure that shapes the future of our city.

“Marian Street Arts Centre could be that kind of achievement: not simply a building, but a place where thousands of children and young people discover confidence, creativity and belonging.

“After an exceptionally long interval of 13 years, the community is ready to help deliver it. We are asking the Minns Government to commit to Marian Street Arts Centre as a tangible investment in the North Shore before the next election.”

Will the Minns Government partner with the community and Council to build the next generation’s theatre?

Petition text
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
Marian St Theatre has been closed for 13 years.
Meanwhile, the owner, Ku-ring-gai Council, has continued to invest heavily in sporting infrastructure, supporting 44 sports fields, 67 tennis courts, two golf courses, and more. But for the arts? Only one small visual art centre.
This imbalance matters.
The arts are not a niche interest. More Australians attend live performances than all of our major sporting codes combined. In Ku-ring-gai, more than 60,000 residents actively participate in the arts, and the area’s population is expected to grow by 27% over the next 15 years.
NSW’s Creative Communities Policy identifies a critical need for more arts spaces like Marian St Theatre. Overwhelming evidence shows the arts strengthen community identity, support education and contribute to a thriving economy.
The approved design to reopen Marian St as a vibrant Arts Centre includes four purpose-built performance spaces for music, dance, theatre, exhibitions and community events. Yet the project remains on hold, ranked as the Council’s lowest funding priority, behind another sports facility, costing over $30 million.
We ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to work with Ku-ring-gai Council to commit to a clear plan to open Marian St Arts Centre within three years as essential cultural infrastructure.

Hayes Theatre Co Unveils Its 2027 Season

Stylized retro city skyline with a heroic figure standing to the right, symbolizing urban leadership and ambition.

Hayes Theatre Co today announced its 2027 season, the company’s biggest yet, expanding beyond its Potts Point home with work presented at larger Sydney venues under the banner Hayes in New Places while continuing an expansive program at the Hayes Theatre. Artistic Directors Richard Carroll and Victoria Falconer, in their final year as ADs, will lead a season of new work, reimaginings, classics and major theatrical events.

Leading the season is Steven Kramer’s Phar Lap: The Electro-Swing Musical, starring Joel Granger, returning to Sydney for an expanded staging at Carriageworks from 8 July to 8 August ahead of a national tour culminating at Melbourne Theatre Company. Phar Lap previously received rave reviews, sold-out seasons and awards; the 2027 staging is on a larger scale.

The Foundry Theatre will be transformed into an underground bar in October for Mack The Knife, a major new work by Richard Carroll, Victoria Falconer and Jordan Shea that re-imagines The Threepenny Opera. Beginning as an immersive promenade experience, it evolves into a rock-cabaret musical shaped by the audience each night.

At the Hayes Theatre in Potts Point, the season of eight productions spans cabaret, comedy, opera, contemporary musical theatre and drama. The year opens with Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door, a new cabaret-concert directed by Hayden Tonazzi with arrangements and musical direction by Steven Kramer (three-week season from 13 January). February and March feature Claudia Barrie’s Lucky Stiff, followed by the return of House of Rot after its sell-out at the 2026 Winter Cabaret Festival. May presents the Australian premiere of the folk epic Swept Away (directed by Drew Livingston), followed in July by Jacinta John’s production of Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal.

In August Matthew Barclay presents a technicolour reimagining of Mozart’s Così fan tutte or The School for Lovers. September brings Cameron Mitchell directing and choreographing the sci-fi satire Be More Chill, and the season closes with Flowers for Mrs Harris starring Rachael Beck and directed by Julia Robertson.

Hayes will again present two major festivals: the Festival of New Work returns for its fourth year extended to three weeks, and the Winter Cabaret Festival returns in June rebranded as Flare. Regular Hayes events include three Neglected Musicals (1776 in March, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in May and Dames at Sea in October), Theys at the Hayes and Victoria Falconer’s Parlour Night for Mardi Gras 2027, plus returning favourites Musical Bang Bang, Home Grown, An Evening With and Carols by Cabaret. Subscriptions are on sale from Monday 14 September, with single tickets on sale at various times in coming months. Phar Lap single tickets are available now from https://hayestheatre.com.au/event/phar-lap-2027-carriageworks/.

With its most expansive program yet, Hayes Theatre Co’s 2027 season is presented as an invitation to discover music theatre in new places, in new forms and at every scale while continuing to champion artists, audiences and Australian work.
