Lawson and Painter have created a unique circus show that celebrates one of the most recognisable fantasy worlds of all time, with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland a ‘curiouser and curiouser’ source of inspiration for all ages.

Creative Producer Simon Painter said he was incredibly excited to bring Cirque Alice to Sydney. “The tales of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland provide the perfect backdrop to create a magical narrative about a cirque show. Filled with some of the most eccentric and larger-than-life characters and creations, the original stories have provided such amazing inspiration for this groundbreaking new production,” Painter said.

Producer Tim Lawson added, “This is the perfect show for everyone – whether you’re on a date night or you want to bring the whole family along – do not miss this performance of jaw dropping acts set around one of the world’s most magical stories.”

Directed By Green Room Award Winner, The Manager Is Me Hits Melbourne Fringe 2026

Feature-The Manager Is Me

VICTORIAN POETRY SLAM CHAMPION NEEDS TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER. UNFORTUNATELY, IT’S HER.

Dayna Fallon’s husband is having a seizure on the bathroom floor. In the next room, her three daughters have unzipped a beanbag across the living room. On her laptop, a 7am Teams meeting wants to know if now is still a good time.

So she does what she always does. She manages the emergency, manages everyone else’s feelings, and schedules her own collapse for a more convenient time.

The Manager Is Me is a 55-minute solo collision of comedy, spoken word and theatre about the impossible job of holding everything together, and the woman discovering she is, somehow, the only person rostered on.

It marks the debut solo theatre work from writer-performer Dayna Fallon, 2025 Victorian State Champion of the Australian Poetry Slam and National Finalist at the Sydney Opera House.

Her blood type is CBF. Her sex life is on Afterpay. She is an accountant, a cook, an unlicensed paediatrician, a household hostage negotiator and a goddamn magician and still the only person in the house who knows where anything is, what everyone needs, and when it’s due. Everyone except herself.

It is a show for anyone who has ever typed “haha all good x” while their life was coming apart in real time.

Built from the slam poems that made Fallon’s reputation, the show stages one impossible morning that refuses to stop happening to her. She wrote it after years of running a house at maximum capacity, caring for a husband with complex health needs, and still feeling like she was falling apart, until the absurdity deserved a witness rather than an apology.

“I wrote this because I’ve made my children laugh to cover the sound of my husband’s seizures,” Fallon says. “I’ve lived the truth of ‘if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry’ and I started wondering how many women are doing that kind of emotional labour in silence.

The Manager Is Me is Directed by Cathy Hunt, director of the Green Room Award-winning Labyrinth.

For audiences drawn to the sharp humour of Fleabag and the fury of Paris Paloma’s Labour, The Manager Is Me is funny first, until suddenly it isn’t, a brutal, brilliant solo work about invisible labour, survival humour and the women who make the impossible look manageable.

Coliseum Theatre To Present The World Premiere Of Cirque Empire

Feature-Cirque Empire

The Coliseum Theatre today announced the world premiere season of Cirque Empire, an epic new spectacle from the creators of the global smash hits Cirque Alice, Now You See Me Live and Circus 1903 which will transform Sydney’s Coliseum Theatre into a 1920’s party from 7 January 2027.

Produced by Simon Painter and Tim Lawson, Cirque Empire boasts extraordinary acts from some of the greatest performers around the globe promising the most outrageous entertainment in a decade of decadence.

The year is 1922. A visionary young impresario recently inherited his late father’s fortune and invested every penny in creating the ultimate New York City destination for roaring twenties revelry. He has imported the most breathtaking, outrageous, and exotic talent from across the globe to perform nightly in his opulent theatrical extravaganza, assembling an eclectic cast of characters from high-flying aerialists and avant-garde acrobats to hysterical comedians and dazzling dancers.

Executive Producer, Tim Lawson, said he was thrilled to be returning to the Coliseum with a world premiere production. “We had such fun and great success with Cirque Alice at the Coliseum last year, it was our first choice to open Cirque Empire. The show will, as always, boast spectacular entertainment that will dazzle audiences of all ages – whether you’re on a date night or you want to bring the whole family along”

With the cast to be announced in the coming months, Creative Producer Simon Painter said audiences could expect a lineup of some of the most extraordinary performers on Earth who must be seen to be believed, from jaw-dropping international circus acts to side-splitting comedians, alongside an elite troupe of Australia’s most sensational dancers.

“The cast that has been selected for this show is amongst the very best acrobatic, dance and comedic talent that has ever been presented in any circus show, and we cannot wait to share these truly unbelievable acts with Sydney audiences,” said Painter.

Richard Errington, CEO of West HQ, said, “Securing Cirque Empire for the Coliseum Theatre is a significant win for Western Sydney and reflects our commitment to bringing exceptional live entertainment to the region. Cirque Empire offers audiences a spectacular and distinctive live experience. It’s another example of the calibre and diversity of entertainment being delivered right here in Western Sydney.

Errington added “This is about more than one show – it’s about building the identity of the Coliseum Theatre as a destination for live entertainment. Cirque Empire adds to that momentum and reinforces the Coliseum’s role in putting Western Sydney firmly on the cultural map.”

Prepare for a night of roaring glamour and outrageous spectacle.

The season is presented by the Coliseum Theatre in association with Tim Lawson and Simon Painter.

12th Annual Smart Fone Flick Fest Finalists Named For Opera House Screenings

Feature-SmartFone Flick Fest (SF3)

Following its ‘Mini’ and Feature Film screening presented with Eventspec at the White Bay Power Station in Rozelle on Saturday night 31 October, the fest moves to iconic Bennelong Point – with the SF3 Kids finals and Awards Ceremony in the Sydney Opera House Playhouse from 10.15am. Then – the thrilling climax – the annual SF3 Gala Finals in the same venue from 4.30pm. And Melbourne gets its own taste with the MINA and SF3 Film Festival at ACMI in Fed Square on 20 November from 6pm.

A record 400 entries including 19 feature films and 16 AI films entered from 70+ countries including some new ones such as Sudan, Georgia, Malaysia, Thailand, Czechia, Luxembourg, Peru, Pakistan, Romania, China. Plus all ‘the usual suspects’ of Australia, America, the UK, South Africa Western Europe. The best of them will face off in front of a slew of industry A-listers, festival ambassadors and celebrity and industry judges for a share of more than $50,000 in prizes.

James Demitri of Hurlstone Park in Sydney returns to back up his Best Feature Film award last year, with a new full-length movie: Three Chapters – a queer, horror and drama anthology with a twist – is the perfect Halloween treat (or trick!).

Gala Finals highlights this year include: Storyboard: the Musical from first-time filmmaker Jordan Gibbs from the USA – a stunning musical hybrid live action and animation made with his animator sister; No Bears Allowed is made by Sydney dad/daughter duo, Jimmy and Stevie Gannon, but the film was written and directed by Stevie, who is only 7 years old, making her our youngest ever Gala Director.

The Hole, by NIDA grad team of Sean Luther Hall and Josh Stewart, starring Albert Mwangi (Bump, Tom Swift, Primitive War) and Jack Ellis (A Place to Call Home, Mr InBetween, Home & Away and Sweet River).

There are two films by filmmakers with a disability – What Life Can Be and You Won’t Be Left Behind.

The Weight of Mercy is a western sci fi, starring 2025 winner Tatjana Marjanovich.

In the SF3 Kids section, there’s Code Blue from the youngest kids at Centre Stage Academy in Blacktown and special effects work from teenage Aston Di Donato of Port Kembla in Hero-Man.

There’s also an incredible film about water and memory plus a deeply moving movie about the cost of living crisis and one man’s decision for the sake of his daughter.

The Mini Screening is diverse: from crochet murders to super-heroes, from a father-daughter disagreement to a ‘good time’ ruined by AI.

As in previous years, all Gala films must be 20 mins or less; SF3 Kids films are for filmmakers 18 and under and must be 10 minutes or less; SF3 Mini films must be 3 minutes or less and the word to be inspired by is “GO”; SF3 AI is for films written by a human and made using generative AI.

Major sponsors include Blackmagic (Gold Sponsor), Melodie and Try & Byte (Silver Sponsors), Chicken & Chips Casting, Røde Microphones and Rubber Monkey (Bronze).

Australian international filmmaker Phillip Noyce heads the Ambassadors list and the judging panel that includes Louis Nowra, Serhat Caradee, Ros Gentle, Joe Ochman, Yolandi Franken and Megan Rikos.

SF3 Festival Director and co-founder Angela Blake says she’s been privileged to experience the richness and diversity in stories from all corners of the globe, and highlighted the incredible array of stories from local Australian filmmakers.

SF3 Ambassador, Australian international actor Kerry Armstrong says SF3 is one of Australia’s most important annual cultural events and celebrates the accessibility of smartphone filmmaking.

Tickets for all session are available at www.sf3.com.au with full program, awards categories and prizes also detailed.
