We have a new musical and it is Australian! The world premiere of the musical Silver Tongue will be playing at the Hayes Theatre Co, Potts Point from November 13 - December 19. Created and written by Miranda Middleton, Jacob Parker and Alex Steedman, it is a revised, renewed version of Treasure Island set to music with a female Long John Silver called Silver Tongue. Yes, there are pirates and treasure but it is also a story about a chosen ‘family’ of castaways searching for treasure and more likely themselves.
Having a sneak preview of a rehearsal the week before the premiere is always fascinating. The actors are ready and willing and voices are being carefully looked after as they ready for the opening. The opportunity to see one song from the whole show is always a generous offer. The actors are still in final rehearsal mode and we were a preview audience getting a flavour of the whole show through an excerpt.
We have some strong cast members starting off with Billie Palin as the lead, Natalie Abbott as Dick and Marty Alix as Jack. Victoria Falconer plays Peg as well as Musical Director, and Jack Green plays Dad and Squire. In addition, having Tana Laga’aia as Hands and also Assistant Music Director and Shannen Alyce Quan as Livesey, and composer Alec Steedman playing violin and Lawrence Hawkins as part of the music, all add a range of experience and pedigree of musical and theatre performance.
Richard Carroll, Co-Artistic Director of Hayes Theatre Co as Director is joined by Vi Lam as Movement Director and Miranda Middleton wearing the two hats of co-writer and Assistant Director.

The cast launched into a sea shanty-style romp, “Down by the Bimbo”,as the pirates happily drank rum and told tall tales of their escapades. It was fun and exacting with a combination of dance and singing setting the scene of a pirate adventure.
In interview, Billie Palin talked about the honour of taking on an original role that she can build as her own. She also discussed how great it is to play a powerful role for women as a ‘force of pure joy’ which allows her to put that part of herself into the role. Billie also said it is great to have such a role having recently been in Pirates of Penzance and Calamity Jane where she can present as a non-typical musical theatre type. Her rich mezzo-soprano voice is great for the bravado and strength of character Silver Tongue represents.
When interviewing Natalie Abbott about playing Dick, she echoed the premise of a female playing a traditionally strong male role and the fun in being able play a character in a musical about everyone’s background being accepted with diversity being celebrated.
Marty Alix discussed enjoying being in his third show with Hayes Theatre and the fun of being part of a cast whom he knows and has worked with before.
The final word is that this is a musical adventure for anyone who loves to see a group of people explore and develop while singing some wonderful music!
