Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta ignites the stage with Daytime Deewane

Feature-Daytime Deewane

Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta (NTofP) is thrilled to present the Australian premiere of Daytime Deewane, a bold, immersive coming-of-age experience from acclaimed and award-winning UK playwright Azan Ahmed, running from the 16 to 25 October at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta.

Step into 1997. A London daytime nightclub pulses with Bhangra beats as two cousins – one quiet, one wild – dive headfirst into a rave that pulses with possibility. Set over a single afternoon, Daytime Deewane follows Farhan and Sadiq as they wrestle with generational expectations, brotherhood, and what it means to be a “good Muslim boy” and a “proper British man”. They’ve got until 6pm to figure it out.

Directed by Sepy Baghaei (Gate Theatre’s Wish You Were Here) and starring Ariyan Sharma (STC’s Dear Evan Hansen) and Ashan Kumar (Mainstage Debut), this high-octane, deeply moving work blends spoken word and dancefloor euphoria into a theatrical gig-night mash-up.

Playwright Azan Ahmed said, “I’m so thrilled and deeply honoured to have Daytime Deewane on at NTofP. Very grateful to Joanne Kee and the team for believing this slice of British South Asian history can have global impact. Looking forward to welcoming you all to the rave!”

Director Sepy Baghaei added, “It’s very special for me to direct this story at home in Parramatta, where I was born and raised. Azan’s writing is vibrant and vital – a fresh voice championing South Asian and Muslim perspectives with nuance, humour and heart”.

NTofP’s Creative and Executive Producer, Joanne Kee, said, “Imagine a daytime rave, pumping Bhangra music, people lost in the groove. Then layer on themes of family, friendship and betrayal for a turbo-charged production. Check out our nightclub vibe for a daytime rave”.

Riverside Theatres Director, Craig McMaster added “We’re excited to present this exhilarating new and innovative work! We look forward to welcoming guests from across Sydney as we continue to support Western Sydney’s extraordinary artists and creatives in the heart of Parramatta”.

With a story rooted in British South Asian history and a soundtrack designed to get audiences on their feet, Daytime Deewane is a celebration of culture, conflict, and joy.

‘The Choral’ Starring Ralph Fiennes To Open The 2025 Russell Hobbs British Film Festival

British Film Festival

From November 5, the 2025 Russell Hobbs British Film Festival, presented by Palace, will open in cities across the country, screening at Palace Cinemas, Palace Nova and Luna Palace Cinemas. This year’s sensational lineup showcases British brilliance at its best with hotly anticipated new releases, documentaries and retrospectives.

Opening the festival is the Australian Premiere of THE CHORAL, a sweeping wartime drama with a stellar cast led by Ralph Fiennes, and directed by Nicholas Hytner. As a group of choralists discover the joys of singing, the young male members must also come to terms with their imminent conscription into the army. Exploring humour and humanity at the heart of a community facing an uncertain future, the film also stars Roger Allam, Mark Addy and Amara Okereke.

Our Special Presentation is Oliver Hermanus’ THE HISTORY OF SOUND, starring an electric Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. A decade-spanning romance centered around the power of music, this gorgeous period drama is a film of lingering melancholic beauty.

Marking the highly anticipated return to the screen of Daniel Day-Lewis, ANEMONE is this year’s Festival Centrepiece. Heralding the directorial debut of son Ronan Day-Lewis, with whom Daniel Day-Lewis co-wrote the script, ANEMONE also features superb performances from Sean Bean and Samantha Morton. The film explores the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons.

Closing the festival is Oscar winner Chloé Zhao’s radiant adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel HAMNET, starring Jessie Buckley as Agnes Shakespeare and Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare. It’s a sensitively observed, magnificently crafted tale about the complexities of love and the healing power of art and creativity, setting the stage for the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.

The festival is delighted to once again welcome naming partner Russell Hobbs — the iconically British appliance brand that’s been adding style, charm, and a proper cup of tea to everyday life since 1952. Dean Hammerton, Marketing Manager, Asia Pacific, says: “We’re thrilled to be back for another year as naming partner of the Russell Hobbs British Film Festival. We’ve always embraced that classic British mix of innovation, tradition, and a dash of style — values that align beautifully with the films being showcased. It’s a real pleasure to once again celebrate the best of British culture, on screen and beyond.”

A standout selection of real-life stories feature in this year’s lineup profiling iconic British identities including John Cleese, Twiggy and John Lennon. In what might be his final European tour, JOHN CLEESE PACKS IT IN is a wry, behind-the-scenes portrait of a comedy legend on the road, battling various ailments, chaotic travel, and his own stubborn refusal to stop.

Exploring the final decade in the life of John Lennon, BORROWED TIME – LENNON’S LAST DECADE is a gripping documentary charting Lennon’s turbulent post-Beatles years of art, activism, and reinvention. Evolving beyond the Beatles, he created music and stood at the forefront of anti-war protests that would make him one of the most influential pop culture icons of all time.

In celebrated documentary TWIGGY, the meteoric rise of the 1960s style icon—bold, sharp, and unforgettable—is explored. The film showcases the fashion, fame, and fearless individuality of Twiggy during a culturally significant period of British history. To complement the documentary, Ken Russell’s THE BOY FRIEND (1971), Twiggy’s first film role, also features in this year’s festival.

From the director of Bend It Like Beckham, Gurinda Chadha, comes the Australian premiere of CHRISTMAS KARMA, based on the classic Dickens story A Christmas Carol. In Chadha’s Bollywood-style musical adaptation, the all-star cast including Hugh Bonneville, Billy Porter, Eva Longoria and Boy George bring the story to life in a modern day, diverse London.

Premiering to rave reviews at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, I SWEAR is a biographical comedy/drama directed, written, and produced by Kirk Jones starring Robert Aramayo, Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Peter Mullan. Based on the true story of John Davidson who was diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome at a time when it was barely identifiable, the film is a comedic and moving story of his journey.

A riotous spoof of period drama mixing forbidden romance, aristocratic scandals, and razor-sharp wit, FACKHAM HALL premieres at selected sessions just prior to the official release in the UK. With an all-star cast and Jimmy Carr’s absurdist flair, the film skewers tradition while serving nonstop laughs and intrigue.

Actor Harris Dickinson’s searing directorial debut URCHIN follows Mike, sleeping rough on the streets, in his fight for redemption, starring Frank Dillane in the lead role. Highly lauded at the 2025 Cannes International Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Film and Best Actor prizes, URCHIN is deeply rooted in humane authenticity.

The majestic drama THE NORTH has been described as the ‘ultimate hiking film’. It is a tale of two old friends who embark on a 600-kilometre journey through the Scottish Highlands, seeking to reconnect not only with nature but with each other and the parts of themselves they have lost.

In icy suspense thriller DEAD OF WINTER, British icon Emma Thompson plays Barb, a woman travelling alone through snowbound northern Minnesota. Barb interrupts the kidnapping of a teenage girl, and hours from the nearest town and with no phone service, realises that she is the young girl’s only hope.

MOSS & FREUD is the biopic about the life of era-defining supermodel Kate Moss and her relationship with British artist Lucian Freud. When Freud offered to paint Moss nude during the nine months of her pregnancy in 2002, it prompted her to embark on an intense journey of self-discovery.

Documentary BECOMING HITCHCOCK – THE LEGACY OF BLACKMAIL dives into the groundbreaking 1929 film that launched Hitchcock’s signature style. Also screening is Hitchcock’s thriller BLACKMAIL, considered a bridge between the silent era and that of the ‘talkies’.

Another must-see for Hitchcock fans, the retrospective HITCHCOCK: THE BEGINNING features ten rarely screened early silent and talkie films from the 1920s to 1930s, including NUMBER 17, CHAMPAGNE, MURDER!, THE SKIN GAME and THE RING.

Set in the Scottish Highlands, GLENROTHAN is a powerful tale of two estranged brothers played by Alan Cumming and Brian Cox, in the much loved actor’s directorial debut.

In a film adapted from an acclaimed novella, THE THING WITH FEATHERS charts the struggle of a young father, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and his sons after a sudden family loss, discovering how love can endure in unexpected forms.

Fueled by powerhouse performances from Vicky Krieps, Aidan Gillen and Colm Meaney, RE-CREATION is a razor-sharp courtroom drama. Director Jim Sheridan reimagines a trial (based on a real story) that never happened with questions, guilt, bias and memory at the centre of a tense chamber where truth itself is on trial.

Dev Patel and Rosy McEwen electrify in chilling folk-horror RABBIT TRAP where music, myth, and obsession collide. Filmmaker Bryn Chainey’s debut blurs reality into an eerie, unforgettable nightmare.

With a brilliant ensemble cast led by enigmatic festival favourite Bill Nighy, & SONS is the story of a world-renowned but reclusive novelist who, believing he is about to die, summons his estranged sons to his home. The adaptation also stars Johnny Flynn, George MacKay, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West.

Stories that focus on the older generation include FOUR MOTHERS, a riotous, heartfelt comedy, and drama DRAGONFLY, starring Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Riseborough, about a neglected pensioner who finds an ally in a younger neighbour.

A story of resilience, friendship and hope against an unforgiving system, LOLLIPOP is a raw, heartfelt drama. Starring Posy Sterling as Molly, a mother recently released from prison, her fight to reclaim her children and give them a life she never had is unrelenting.

In contemporary noir thriller ISLANDS, Sam Riley stars as a tennis coach at a holiday resort who befriends a couple with unnerving results. WORDS OF WAR tells the true story of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, portrayed by an incredible cast including Maxine Peake, James Lawtey, Jason Isaacs, Ellie Bamber and Ciarán Hinds.

In a special Retrospective entitled BRITISH BRILLIANCE, six iconic British Best Picture winners are showcased on the big screen including CHARIOTS OF FIRE, GANDHI, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI, THE ENGLISH PATIENT and THE KING’S SPEECH.

Rounding out the documentaries is THE GOLDEN SPURTLE and I AM MARTIN PARR. The contestants of the annual World Porridge Making Championship battle with oats and ladles in a Highland village, while I AM MARTIN PARR reveals the iconic British photographer behind the lens.

In a celebration of 25 years since its release, BILLY ELLIOT remains a heartwarming tale of grit and grace, following an 11-year-old boy who defies expectations, trading boxing gloves for ballet shoes.

The Australian premiere of GROW will delight families in an exuberant tale full of giant pumpkins, madcap characters, and a little girl who just might be a pumpkin-growing savant starring Nick Frost, Alan Carr and Jane Horrocks.

Black Swan State Theatre Company Announces Bold 2026 Season

2026 Season Black Swan Theatre

“2026 is a vibrant mix of powerhouse performances, uncompromising original commissions, lauded emerging voices and inspiring collaborations.” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

Black Swan State Theatre Company is thrilled to announce its 2026 Season — a dynamic year of daring stories, fresh voices and visionary collaborations. Showcasing bold new Australian works alongside reimagined classics and international gems, the program reflects Black Swan’s commitment to delivering theatre that celebrates our diversity and highlights the unique voices within it.

Black Swan begins 2026 with the captivating talents of multi-award-winning Meow Meow and her unique brand of subversive and hypnotising storytelling in Meow Meow’s Red Shoes. From fauns to swans to dazzling showgirls, Meow Meow leads us through a riotous journey of music, movement, and meaning. In Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, a girl is cursed to dance forever—yet Meow Meow wonders: what if she could never start dancing at all? Directed by Kate Champion, co-produced with Belvoir St Theatre and Malthouse Theatre and presented in association with Perth Festival, Meow Meow’s Red Shoes is at His Majesty’s Theatre for a strictly limited season 26 February to 1 March.

“Sensuously articulate and creatively comic, Meow Meow has the unique ability to seduce your brain while she reinvigorates your soul, turning tears of laughter into tender recognitions,” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

Back by popular demand, Australian legend Heather Mitchell returns in her award-winning performance as Ruth Bader Ginsburg in RBG: Of Many, One. Written by Olivier Award-winning playwright Suzie Miller, directed by Priscilla Jackman and produced by Sydney Theatre Company, this intimate theatrical portrait of one woman who changed history, returns to Heath Ledger Theatre, 19 March to 4 April.

“If our record-breaking waiting list for tickets to RBG in ‘24 was any indication, you will want to book early for this one. Witness Heather Mitchell in a career highlight as she becomes Ruth Bader Ginsberg before your eyes. An amazing real life icon, a trailblazer like none before her. This is definitely a ‘don’t miss’ production!” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

Commissioned by Black Swan and premiering at Heath Ledger Theatre 9-31 May, is the powerful reimagining of Tim Winton’s The Shepherd’s Hut, directed by Tim McGarry. Fifteen-year-old Jaxie Clackton, angry and alone, flees across WA’s salt lands. Instead of freedom, he finds Fintan MacGillis, a disgraced priest exiled to a crumbling hut at the edge of the world. As the unlikely pair form a fragile bond, buried secrets rise, forcing both to reckon with their pasts and confront life-changing choices. Directed by Matt Edgerton and starring George Shevtsov, The Shepherd’s Hut is a raw and poetic exploration of masculinity, isolation and the violence of hope.

“Quintessentially West Australian, Tim Winton’s writing has no comparison in its ability to capture how our human nature is inextricably linked to the landscape we inhabit. The Shepherd’s Hut, cleverly adapted by Tim McGarry, takes us into the probing isolation of nature in search of personal redemption and release,” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

Who decides where care stops and control begins? This age-old question is explored in The Almighty Sometimes at Subiaco Arts Centre, 19 June to 5 July. Anna has been medicated for as long as she can remember. At 18, she wonders who she is without all that: could she fall in love, go to uni, even just feel like herself? Her mother, Renée, clings to the fragile calm they’ve fought to keep—but Anna’s choices are no longer hers to make. Written by Kendall Feaver and directed by Emily McLean, The Almighty Sometimes is a gripping portrait of a mother and daughter wrestling with love, risk and identity.

“The Almighty Sometimes is the deeply affecting early play by Australian author Kendall Fever. Such an impressive debut, this play captures the heart-wrenching dilemma of any parent who has had to learn to let their offspring finally steer their own course alongside the experience of a young adult who needs to rebel in order to test their own boundaries – even at the expense of heartbreak and damage. Did I mention it’s also funny?” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

From the pen of well-known West Australian writer and artist Will O’Mahony comes the world premiere of Day (After Day) In The Life Of The Useless. Pete’s wedding is off. Dumped and branded “a robot,” he turns to AI for guidance. Its advice? “Live well”. Easier said than done. What follows is a freefall of outrageous encounters, comic disasters and spectacularly bad luck. When life boots you off the bus of life, can you ever climb back on—and is AI already driving? Directed by Adam Mitchell, Day (After Day) In the Life Of The Useless is at Heath Ledger Theatre 29 August to 20 September.

“An artist long associated to Black Swan and fondly familiar to its audiences, Will O’Mahony’s brand new play Day (After Day) In The Life of Useless is a deftly woven, giddy portrayal of a character who, with best intentions to rise above, descends ever lower into own goals and unfortunate circumstances. New writing, locally generated, bold, exciting and original,” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

Associate Artistic Director Naomi Pigram-Mitchell leads a stellar cast of Broome’s finest musicians, vocalists, dancers and performers in a concert that pays homage to the legendary artists who came before and amplifies the voices shaping the future. Following a sold-out 2025 Perth season, Raised in Big Spirit Country is heading home to Broome to the Goolarri Amphitheatre 3-5 September.

“Raised in Big Spirit Country is a co-production which we are extremely proud of. It harks back to Black Swan’s foundation as one of the first major theatre companies to champion original Aboriginal plays and musicals. Naomi Pigram Mitchell has nurtured this production into life where its Perth debut was a sold-out hit. It is now returning to its roots in Broome where it will continue to develop and evolve its magical mix of song and story-telling,” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

The second half of 2026 brings together two of WA’s leading theatre companies, Black Swan and Yirra Yaakin, for a bold new co-production that is as confronting as it is hilarious, and personal as it is political. Jacky is a biting new play about family, work, culture and the compromises we make to survive. With wit, grit and a wicked sense of humour, Declan Furber Gillick shines a light on the cost of navigating identity in contemporary Australia through Jacky, a smart and enterprising young Aboriginal man making a life for himself in the city. Directed by Kate Champion and Maitland Schnaars, Jacky is at Subiaco Arts Centre 23 October to 8 November.

“Another early play from an outstanding young Australian playwright – Declan Furber Gillick. Jacky received outstandingly positive reactions from critics and audiences alike in Melbourne and Sydney. I’m thrilled that we’re able to present an original production of this provocative play in collaboration with our Perth-based artistic neighbours Yirra Yaakin,” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

Concluding the 2026 season is the ever-popular The Pool, ready to make a splash in regional WA, including Port Hedland, Karratha, Newman and Wagin before a special return season at a new aquatic centre in Perth. Written by Steve Rodgers and directed by Kate Champion, audiences are invited poolside to share, via personal headsets, a glimpse into the lives of people who call their local pool their second home.

“After its extremely successful Perth Festival ’24 debut, our production of The Pool will tour regional WA in ’26. Celebrating each local community who gravitate towards these venerated public spaces, we look forward to sharing the delight this production brings to pool lovers of every age and aquatic ability,” Kate Champion, Artistic Director.

The 2026 Black Swan season is on sale to Friends of Black Swan on 7 October and to the General Public on 14 October. Tickets: blackswantheatre.com.au
