Mayfair: A New Musical – Board Games, Big Band Villains and Bona Fide Classics

Feature-Mayfair: A New Musical

What happens when an all-work-no-play man lands in an alternate dimension populated by characters inspired by classic board games? Roundhouse Theatrical Co. is bringing Mayfair: A New Musical to Melbourne audiences, redeveloping its 2025 Perth production, Monopoly: The Unauthorised Musical. We go behind the scenes to explore the new material, colourful characters and creative choices shaping this next chapter.

About The Musical – Mayfair: A New Musical

What is this musical about?

Very loosely, it’s about games!

An ‘all work, no play’ man from our world accidentally gets launched into an alternate dimension full of characters inspired by classic board games, and has to navigate this strange new place and try to make his way home.

What does this production bring to this musical that audiences may not have seen before?

This production is a redevelopment of our 2025 original work – ‘Monopoly: The Unauthorised Musical’, which debuted to great success in Perth. This remount was a great opportunity for us to go back and fix all the things we didn’t think worked about the original script + score, so it contains new scenes and moments that even our 2025 audiences haven’t seen!

Which number in the show is the one you cannot wait for audiences to experience?

Our show features a classic Disney-style villain, and her number (#7 – ‘Oh I Know’) is a swinging big band tune with a flashy dance break. Charmaine Gorman in the role of Mayfair (our villain) is absolutely chewing the scenery in this number, and audiences should love it.

What has been the most challenging scene or sequence to stage?

We have a staged sword fighting sequence that has been professionally choreographed by Scott Jackson, which our actors diligently practice before every rehearsal for safety and comfort. It’s a lot of effort and time, but the result is thrilling!

How does the music serve the story in this production?

I’m a big believer that every song in a musical should either explain something to the audience, or end with the lead character(s) in a different narrative or emotional place to when the song began.

Additionally, each character has their own musical style, theme, and motifs that turn up throughout the underscoring. It’s a very cinematic score in that sense!

What character in the show do you think will surprise people the most?

Baron Von Strategy always catches people by surprise and becomes our crowd favourite. The character gives the actor an opportunity to show off a really wide emotional range, as well as having a lot of the funniest moments in the show.

What is the emotional heart of this musical, and how have you approached it?

At the core of it, this show is about connecting with those around us through that open playfulness that we all have as children, but tend to lose somewhere along the way. The protagonist of the story starts out as an arrogant, sarcastic killjoy, and has to learn to reconnect with that side of himself.

What will people be humming on the way to the car park?

So many to choose from! There’s at least 6 musical hooks in the score that I think have the potential to become bona fide classics.

Who in the cast is most like their character, and who is least?

Akansha Hungenhally as a bookish nerd with a secretly big voice turned out to be the perfect casting for our Scrabble-inspired character Miss Wordsmith!

Charmaine Gorman’s transformation into the villainous Mayfair is by far the biggest shift. Charmaine is an absolute sweetheart off the stage and an absolute terror in this role!

What sort of person is going to absolutely love this show?

I think people from all ages and walks of life can find something to love here! Those who enjoy the silly and slightly absurd will probably find it extra special.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Just a call to action! Please buy tickets and come see this show. I can confidently say it’s very polished and ‘complete’ as far as new works go, but all of that comes at a cost! We need to get people through the door so we can keep doing this. Come support the next big thing! You won’t regret it.

Our thanks for sharing the imagination and care behind Mayfair. Beneath its playful premise is a heartfelt invitation to reconnect with others and rediscover a little of the openness we so often leave behind in childhood. About The Musical – Maytide’s It Is Well with My Soul: The Musical

Feature-Maytide's It Is Well with My Soul: The Musical

Prepare to be enchanted and deeply moved by Maytide Theatre Company’s latest production, “It Is Well with My Soul: The Musical.” Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Andrew Broadbent, the Production Manager and Co-Author behind this powerful adaptation of the heartrending true story of Anna and Horatio Spafford.

About Maytide’s It Is Well with My Soul: The Musical

What is this Production about?

This beautiful tale of tragedy and faith is based on the true story of Anna and Horatio Spafford. It follows Anna’s journey from her Norwegian roots to 19th-century Chicago and later Jerusalem, capturing the couple’s faith and resilience after losing their four daughters in the S.S. Ville du Havre shipwreck. The narrative explores themes of grief, hope, redemption, and spiritual transformation, brought to life through original music, heartfelt performances, and rich historical context. The famous hymn “It Is Well with My Soul,” written by Horatio Spafford, has inspired our stage musical.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

Co-writing this adaptation of the story, it was challenging not only in the discovery of the many historical details needed to ensure accuracy, but also in ensuring it conveyed a captivating story across the stage for audiences. We have created more than just a retelling of a story – it’s a healing hymn in theatrical form.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

I got a message from Director and Owner of Maytide Theatre Company, Ally Gum, about this play that was spoken about in a radio interview that had piqued her interest, and after she was done telling me about it, I was also hooked. I had always wanted to be involved in an Adelaide Fringe production, and I think the stars really aligned with this project

What sort of person is going to love this show?

In a Fringe festival that is full of short acts, and one-acts, It Is Well with Our Soul is a production that audiences can sink their teeth into, ingest something gritty for their brain to absorb.
This story is also inspired by a hymn that is now 153 years old, and well known across the globe in varying christian circles and churches, so parishioners will be keen to get their tickets too

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

Hopefully the audience will be reflecting on any comparisons in their life – if they’re going through a hard time, struggling with issues – they’ll be able to find the courage to reach out to their communities and seek assistance in their faith. Or maybe they’ll even find a new creative they want to follow on social media…

What’s going to surprise people about this show?

This show isn’t a comedy. When I think about the Fringe, keywords such as comedy, cabaret, experimental come to mind. But this is a historical drama that has been fleshed out by actors passionate in their craft that want to give their best to audiences

Who has the best costume?

We’ve had a sneak peek at the costumes already – Anna and her daughters in Act One have matching red/maroon costumes that look amazing together. Horatio’s early costume while he’s still young is also pretty schmick.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

In 2026, people face many struggles in their lives – the economic crisis, homelessness, unemployment, discrimination… the list goes on. Through this story, we learn, and want our audiences to learn that we not only survive but prosper through our communities and our faith.

In the 1800s, the Spafford family faced many struggles themselves – the Great Chicago Fire, leaving ⅓ of the population homeless; the Ville du Havre shipwreck, losing their four daughters. They were surrounded by disaster, and even losing a child to scarlet fever and were lost until they found their community and focussed on their faith.

By penning the lyrics to It Is Well with My Soul, Horatio has helped and given comfort and guidance to many people over the last 150 years.

It Is Well inspires reflection and compassion, reminding viewers that sorrow need not define a life, and that love, service, and faith can chart a path forward. It offers not just a retelling—but a healing hymn in theatrical form. We are blessed for the chance to be sharing this story.

About The Musical – Monopoly: The Unauthorised Musical

Feature-Monopoly: The Unauthorised Musical

Today, we’re diving into the whimsical world of Monopoly: The Unauthorised Musical with its creator, Jasper Cruden. Described as a fantastical adventure with a touch of 80’s and 90’s nostalgia, this original musical promises a delightful journey with characters that leap straight out of your favourite games. So, grab your tokens and get ready for a tour through a reimagined board game universe that’s sure to captivate and entertain.

About Monopoly: The Unauthorised Musical

What is this Production about?

The journey of Monopoly: The Unauthorised Musical began in late 2021 when final year WAAPA composition student Jasper Cruden started thinking of clever ways to structure his graduating recital. In typical chaotic fashion, he crafted a simple but entertaining story about some of the player tokens from the classic game ‘Monopoly’ (Boot, Iron, Car, and Scottish Terrier) attempting to bring an explosive end to the rule of a tyrannical queen

Immediately following the success of that performance, Jasper and drummer Ian Tassicker began discussing ideas to further develop the project, with Ian taking on the bulk of the responsibility of re-working the existing story. The story was reshaped to expand the world and bring in characters from classic games such as Chess and Charades, and the human character Scott was added to give audiences a window into this fantastical world.

Join Scott on his unexpected adventure through a fantastical world inspired by ‘Alice in Wonderland’, and 80’s/90’s live action fantasy (‘The Princess Bride’, ‘Labyrinth’) as he meets the likes of the fierce but kindly Lady Luck, dramatic Sir Knight, verbose Miss Wordsmith, awkward Baron von Strategy, unpredictable Admiral Cannonblast, and the ruthless Mayfair.

What character are you playing, and what can you share with us about them?

I’m not playing one of the characters. I created them! I am playing drums in the band though.

Our characters include:

Scott – An uptight lawyer who is known in his town for being no fun at all. He goes on an unexpected journey in a very ‘Alice in Wonderland’ fashion and comes out the other side changed.

Lady Luck – A very hot/cold personality who switches between foul-mouthed aggression and sweet kindness. The leader of the group of heroes and the only one able to protect them from Mayfair. Avatar of cards and dice.

Miss Wordsmith – An overly verbose nerd who struggles to get the other characters to understand her. Avatar of word spelling games.

Sir Knight – A courageous but often overly dramatic warrior. Is compelled to deliver a soliloquy on death every time he sees a skull. Only walks in ‘L’ shapes. Avatar of Chess.

Baron von Strategy – A somewhat cowardly, awkward chap who suffers from the curse of no one ever having heard of his game: ’99 Gnomes That Know How to Knit’.

Admiral Cannonblast: A rambunctious pirate who acts as an agent of chaos among the group. Drinks homemade booze made from sea slugs. Avatar of games where you blindly guess where the opponents boats are and attempt to sink them via a grid reference.

Mayfair – The evil tyrant and antagonist of our story. Forces our heroes to play games for her amusement, and drags the losers away to be trapped forever as she attempts to cement her monopoly on power.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

Bringing an entirely original idea into the world is always difficult, but especially so when it’s a full length musical! This project has been in development for 2 years, and it’s been countless hours of drafting, reading, then re-drafting scripts and music. We’re also learning how to function as producers and marketers as we go!

I’ve never been this busy, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything at this point.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

Creating an original work that means something to people is something I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve also come away from every show I’ve ever played as a musician going ‘I think that script could have worked better if XYZ were changed’, and this is my chance to prove myself right.

What sort of person is going to love this show?

Anyone who is young at heart and finds joy in playing games! There’s something in this show for all ages, and we’ve got such a wide range of characters that everyone should find someone to root for.

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

Personally, I hope they go home thinking about finally getting around to organising that games night they keep putting off!

What’s going to surprise people about this show?

Probably how professional it all looks and sounds! I think most people hear the words ‘Original Musical’ or ‘Debut Show’ and it sets off alarm bells about lower production values or aspects of the show being a bit under-cooked.

Our team is comprised entirely of people who are either in the professional space already or actively working towards entering it, so we’re executing at a high level.

How is this production bringing something new to this story?

The entire story is new, so I’ll answer instead by saying that we’re aiming to bring something new to the theatre scene in Perth, and ideally, the world.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Only that ticket sales are going pretty well, and we’re expecting a full house on opening night. Don’t miss your opportunity to be there for the premiere of something special!
