Rally In Red To Save Sydney Theatre – Sun 2 August

Feature-Rally in Red

For over 100 years, Marian Street Theatre has been a gathering place for Ku-ring-gai; from its early days as a memorial hall to its evolution into one of Australia’s most respected suburban theatres. Thousands of artists have performed there, and generations of locals have treasured memories of their own local theatre – but it has lain derelict for 13 years.

Residents, artists and community organisations will gather outside Gordon Library on Sunday 2 August for Rally in Red, a community protest calling on Ku-ring-gai Council to preserve the approved Development Application (DA) for Marian St Theatre before it expires on 19 August.

The rally follows Ku-ring-gai Council’s decision on 16 June to abandon the approved redevelopment after more than 20 years of reports, consultation and planning, placing $1.7 million of public investment in architectural design and community engagement at risk.

If the DA expires, the only approved pathway to reopening Marian St Theatre as a contemporary Arts Centre will be lost.

Marian St Theatre Action Chair Jessica Blaxland Ashby said the community was determined not to let that happen. “There are just weeks left to save the approved plans for Marian St Theatre. Stand with us before it’s too late.”

The approved redevelopment, designed by nationally recognised theatre architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, would transform Marian St Theatre into a contemporary Arts Centre with spaces for theatre, music, dance, exhibitions & community events.

Ku-ring-gai has 44 sports fields, 67 tennis courts, two golf courses and recently spent $26.6 million on two basketball courts inside a high school, yet has no dedicated, publicly accessible performing arts venue. The Marian St redevelopment would fill that gap and create a vibrant, accessible cultural destination.

The campaign has gathered momentum since Council’s decision, with the NSW Parliamentary petition attracting strong community support and the future of Marian St Theatre being raised in both the Australian and NSW Parliaments this week.

Federal Member for Bradfield, Nicolette Boele, said: “It’s critical when we recognise and we preserve cultural heritage. And to ensure that there is adequate arts infrastructure for our growing communities on the North Shore.”

State Member for Davidson Matt Cross said: “I thank all volunteers who are selfless in their work to promote culture and arts in Ku-ring-gai. I look forward to continuing my support for the group and I thank Marian St ACTION.”

Greens Senator David Shoebridge said: “I’ve experienced the love of live theatre at Marian Street Theatre and I 100% believe that opportunity needs to be there for future generations.”

Patron of Marian St Theatre Action and acclaimed playwright David Williamson said: “The design of the renovation is first-class, but the council keeps deferring a decision while approving expensive sports oval developments, demonstrating yet again where the arts rate in our national psyche.”

Marian St Theatre Action Committee member Tony Bates said: “The community did everything Council asked. We participated in consultation after consultation and were repeatedly assured these approved plans would be preserved. Instead, Councillors blindsided us all at the last minute. Put a shovel in the ground and get Marian St Theatre open.”

Jimmy O’neills And Sacred Heart Combine For Christmas In July Cold Dip!

Feature-Jimmy O'Neill's Christmas Cold Dip

This winter, courageous participants are set to dive into the freezing waters of St Kilda for the first-ever Christmas Cold Dip. Hosted by Jimmy O’Neill’s Whiskey & Ale House, the event aims to generate much needed funds for SACRED HEART MISSION, to support local St Kilda women and children experiencing homelessness during Melbourne’s coldest months.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, 25 July, beginning at 10am at St Kilda Beach, directly in front of the Sea Baths. This traditional Irish-style sea plunge offers a bracing challenge for those who love a cold water dip or who just want to support a great cause, after which swimmers are invited to the Acland Street home of Jimmy O’Neill’s to defrost with classic Irish winter warmer.

Wade Piva, Director of Engagement and Development, at Sacred Heart Mission said, “We think the team at Jimmy O’Neill’s are absolute legends for being willing to take a dip in the icy sea for Sacred Heart Mission. Every dollar they’ll raise will help provide nutritious meals, crisis support and housing for people who are going through hard times here in our community. Right now, we’re seeing more people facing homelessness than ever – so what they’re doing means a great deal. Thank you and stay warm!”

What is the Christmas Cold Dip?
The Christmas Cold Dip is a long-standing Irish tradition, where brave swimmers gather on Christmas Day in Ireland to take a dip in the icy sea, before celebrating Christmas at home with family and friends. Since our Aussie Christmas is a little too warm, swimmers will be asked to brave St Kilda Beach in our winter for the inaugural Jimmy O’Neill’s Christmas Cold Dip which is in line with the pub’s annual Christmas in July festivities.

Here’s how it works:
Register yourself OR your team with 50% of your registration fee going directly to Sacred Heart Mission – just $10 can feed one person!
Get fundraising and encourage friends and family to sponsor your icy dip
Brave the cold St Kilda waters on 25 July, then warm up at your home away from home, Jimmy O’Neill’s!

Zenita O’Neill, Jimmy O’Neill’s owner and St Kilda local said, “Melbourne is absolutely freezing right now and as a St. Kilda local it’s heart breaking to see the amount of women and children sleeping rough this winter. In Melbourne right now approximately 30,000 people experience homelessness on any given night, with the majority experiencing “hidden homelessness” sleeping in rooming houses, cars, or couch surfing where they can. Women over 55 represent a huge part of this number and kids under 12 make up one in seven. We wanted to do something meaningful for these people, that is also fun and honours some of the craic from home that Jimmy is renowned for! We hope lots of people get on board for this one.”

Fierce Cast Announced For We Are The Tigers At Hayes Theatre Co

Feature-We Are The Tigers

Cheers Productions is thrilled to announce the powerhouse cast that will bring the cult-hit musical We Are The Tigers to life, unleashing an exhilarating blend of pop anthems, fierce choreography and deadly secrets to Hayes Theatre from 9 October 2026. Tickets are on sale now from hayestheatre.com.au.

Set at the annual sleepover of the Giles Corey High School cheerleading squad, We Are The Tigers follows the team as their biggest problems in life pivot from a viral fail to a dead teammate. As rivalries intensify and loyalties are tested, the remaining cheerleaders must uncover the truth before they become the next victim.

Leading the squad is Brianna Bishop (Grease, Hairspray) as determined team captain Riley, alongside Olivia Vásquez (Moulin Rouge! The Musical, In the Heights) as the effortlessly popular Cairo. Newcomer AJ Betts and Chelsea Dawson (SIX, Zombie! The Musical) play Kate and Chess, lifelong friends navigating the growing pains of ambition and change. Anabel Jamieson (Tivoli Lovely) stars as the devoted Annleigh, determined to keep both her faith and her cheer squad intact, while Artemis Alfonzetti (Pretty Woman, Titanique) brings attitude and edge to her rebellious stepsister Farrah.

Rounding out the squad are Jenny Guigayoma (The Addams Family) as eager freshman Mattie, and newcomers Caitlin McCallig and Millie Seeto who play loyal team mascot, Reese, and Eva, a scholarship star simply trying to make it to graduation.

Recent WAAPA graduate Pippin Carroll plays Clarke, the patient and devoted boyfriend caught in the chaos. Supporting the company are Carla Venezia (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) as Swing and Dance Captain and Jake Tyler (Cats, The Deb) as Cover.

Making her directorial debut, Chiara Assetta has assembled an exceptional company of some of Australia’s most exciting emerging performers alongside established musical theatre favourites. She is joined by Kim Gilbert (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) as Music Director and Zoe Ioannou (The Dismissal) as Assistant Director and Choreographer, leading a dynamic female-driven creative team behind this thrilling new production.

“This cast has extraordinary chemistry, incredible vocal power and the athleticism needed to tackle one of the most demanding contemporary musicals around,” said Assetta. “They’re fearless performers who capture both the humour and heart of these characters while embracing the show’s thrilling twists. Audiences are in for a wild ride.”

Featuring an infectious pop-rock score by Preston Max Allen, We Are The Tigers has become an international cult favourite for its sharp wit, unapologetic energy and suspense-filled storytelling. Equal parts cheer competition and whodunnit, it’s a musical where every routine raises the stakes and every character has something to hide.

This October, Sydney audiences are invited to join the squad—but keep your eyes open. At Giles Corey High, they have killer school spirit.
