About The Musical – Maytide’s It Is Well with My Soul: The Musical

Feature-Maytide's It Is Well with My Soul: The Musical

Prepare to be enchanted and deeply moved by Maytide Theatre Company’s latest production, “It Is Well with My Soul: The Musical.” Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Andrew Broadbent, the Production Manager and Co-Author behind this powerful adaptation of the heartrending true story of Anna and Horatio Spafford.

About Maytide’s It Is Well with My Soul: The Musical

What is this Production about?

This beautiful tale of tragedy and faith is based on the true story of Anna and Horatio Spafford. It follows Anna’s journey from her Norwegian roots to 19th-century Chicago and later Jerusalem, capturing the couple’s faith and resilience after losing their four daughters in the S.S. Ville du Havre shipwreck. The narrative explores themes of grief, hope, redemption, and spiritual transformation, brought to life through original music, heartfelt performances, and rich historical context. The famous hymn “It Is Well with My Soul,” written by Horatio Spafford, has inspired our stage musical.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

Co-writing this adaptation of the story, it was challenging not only in the discovery of the many historical details needed to ensure accuracy, but also in ensuring it conveyed a captivating story across the stage for audiences. We have created more than just a retelling of a story – it’s a healing hymn in theatrical form.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

I got a message from Director and Owner of Maytide Theatre Company, Ally Gum, about this play that was spoken about in a radio interview that had piqued her interest, and after she was done telling me about it, I was also hooked. I had always wanted to be involved in an Adelaide Fringe production, and I think the stars really aligned with this project

What sort of person is going to love this show?

In a Fringe festival that is full of short acts, and one-acts, It Is Well with Our Soul is a production that audiences can sink their teeth into, ingest something gritty for their brain to absorb.
This story is also inspired by a hymn that is now 153 years old, and well known across the globe in varying christian circles and churches, so parishioners will be keen to get their tickets too

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

Hopefully the audience will be reflecting on any comparisons in their life – if they’re going through a hard time, struggling with issues – they’ll be able to find the courage to reach out to their communities and seek assistance in their faith. Or maybe they’ll even find a new creative they want to follow on social media…

What’s going to surprise people about this show?

This show isn’t a comedy. When I think about the Fringe, keywords such as comedy, cabaret, experimental come to mind. But this is a historical drama that has been fleshed out by actors passionate in their craft that want to give their best to audiences

Who has the best costume?

We’ve had a sneak peek at the costumes already – Anna and her daughters in Act One have matching red/maroon costumes that look amazing together. Horatio’s early costume while he’s still young is also pretty schmick.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

In 2026, people face many struggles in their lives – the economic crisis, homelessness, unemployment, discrimination… the list goes on. Through this story, we learn, and want our audiences to learn that we not only survive but prosper through our communities and our faith.

In the 1800s, the Spafford family faced many struggles themselves – the Great Chicago Fire, leaving ⅓ of the population homeless; the Ville du Havre shipwreck, losing their four daughters. They were surrounded by disaster, and even losing a child to scarlet fever and were lost until they found their community and focussed on their faith.

By penning the lyrics to It Is Well with My Soul, Horatio has helped and given comfort and guidance to many people over the last 150 years.

It Is Well inspires reflection and compassion, reminding viewers that sorrow need not define a life, and that love, service, and faith can chart a path forward. It offers not just a retelling—but a healing hymn in theatrical form. We are blessed for the chance to be sharing this story.

About The Production – Centre Stage: A Variety Spectacular

Feature-Centre Stage: A Variety Spectacular

Today, we had a delightful chat with the electrifying host and performer of Centre Stage: A Variety Spectacular. This production promises to spotlight the incredible talents of Queensland’s emerging young performers.

About Centre Stage: A Variety Spectacular

What is this Production about?

Centre Stage: A Variety Spectacular is a celebration of young Queensland talent, showcasing the next generation of performers in one high-energy show. It’s a mix of circus, dance, vocals, magic, acro, and comedy, all created and performed by emerging artists produced by emerging artists. The goal was to build a platform where youth performers could collaborate across art forms and experience what it’s like to be part of a fully produced, professional-style theatre event.

What character are you playing, and what can you share with us about them?

I’ll be hosting the production and performing as a variety artist, blending juggling, magic, and comedy throughout the show. My role is to connect the different acts, keep the energy flowing, and bring the audience along for the ride. It’s fun because I get to be the link between all these amazing young performers and help set the tone for each act.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

The biggest challenge has been weaving together so many different performance styles into one cohesive show, while still giving each performer their own moment to shine. It’s also a huge team effort behind the scenes, with young artists learning how to work in a professional production setting. Balancing creativity, timing, and stage logistics has been a learning curve, but it’s also what makes the show so exciting and rewarding.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

Well i came up with the idea in early 2025 since I wanted to create a space where young performers could experience what it’s like to be part of a professional production, something that gives them real stage experience, collaboration, and confidence. I’ve been performing since I was five years old, and I know how important it is to have opportunities early on. From that one idea grew many.. many.. many different show types and names but we ended up with Centre Stage.

What sort of person is going to love this show?

Anyone who loves variety, creativity, and seeing pure talent in action! It’s perfect for families, theatre lovers, and anyone who enjoys music, dance, circus, acro, and magic all in one show. There’s something for everyone from high-energy dance numbers to heartfelt vocal performances and jaw-dropping circus acts. It’s fast-paced, funny, and full of heart.

This production is breaking new ground by being an Australian-first youth collaboration that brings together Queensland’s brightest emerging performers across circus, music, dance, acro, and magic. It’s not just a show it’s a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the next generation of live entertainment in a high-energy, family-friendly format. Audiences will see fresh, original performances that you won’t find anywhere else.

Who has the best costume?

The show features a dazzling variety of costumes across circus, dance, and magic acts, but one standout is Macca Cloke’s costume, whose vibrant blue, intricately bedazzled costume perfectly matches the energy/brightness of the show and creativity of their performance.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

About The Production – Dear Son

Feature-Dear Son

Today, we had the pleasure of speaking with the talented team behind Dear Son, a deeply moving stage adaptation directed by Isaac Drandic. Prepare to be captivated by a blend of courageous storytelling and emotional depth as these letters flow beautifully on stage.

About Dear Son

What is this Production about?

The show Dear Son, is based on the book called Dear Son by Thomas Mayo. It’s a show that’s been adapted into a stage play written by John Harvey and Isaac Drandic, and directed by Isaac Drandic. Thomas Mayo invited 13 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander men, including himself, to write a letter to their sons and fathers.

In the show, we have 5 men, actors on stage and we bring these letters to life.

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?

One of the challenges was making sure we honour all the letters in a theatrical structure of storytelling. They are so personal and powerful that we worked really hard to take care of and share the bravery of these courageous men and us creatives in production as fathers and sons. And through the whole process it’s been an honour to be a apart of and healing personally as a father and son.

Why did you want to be involved in this production?

I’ve been apart of the first workshop and read the book and always wanted to work with Isaac as a director. We’ve worked together on Romeo & Juliet many moons ago hahaha, I think it was 2008 STC production as actors, but it was well overdue. And also, as an indigenous storyteller, I feel it’s my responsibility to be apart of this production when it was offered.

What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?

They will be thinking about all the men in their lives.

What’s going to surprise people about this show?

How much they are connected to these stories.

How is this production bringing something new to this story?

You will see 5 men on stage on a beautiful set having a yarn, and when I say yarn, I mean deep yarn. With the letters flowing through us.

Where can patrons purchase tickets to this production?

Thank you so much for sharing your insights and passion with us. Wishing you all the best as you bring the heartfelt stories of Dear Son to the stage, and may your performance move audiences far and wide. Break a leg!

Meet The Actor – Harrison Clark

Feature-Sabotage

We sat down with the talented star of the upcoming show “Sabotage” to get an exclusive peek behind the curtains.

About Harrison Clark

What do you enjoy most about acting?

The emotional catharsis of it all. I find it incredibly healing and euphoric to explore the gamut of human emotions through characters whose circumstances are incredibly different from my own.

Do you want to work in film, live theatre or both?

I want to do it all. Any place where I can write or creatively express myself.

Do you believe talent or training is more important to an actor?

I do think there’s an element of talent that’s innate when it comes to acting, something instinctive that can’t really be taught. Whether or not someone chooses to go to drama school is entirely up to the individual but I don’t believe it’s essential. I believe that best training you can do to help your talent grow is by expanding your circle and getting outside your comfort zone. Those lived experiences become part of your toolkit, deepening your performances and helping you build richer characters.

What strategies do you use to overcome stage fright or nerves before a performance?

Honestly, I don’t think there’s a way to completely combat either! What I try to do is arm myself with the assurance that all the hard work gone into the rehearsal process and all the research behind creating the character will come through. As long as I’ve done the work, I know logically there isn’t much to be afraid of.

Are there any particular genres or types of roles that you prefer or feel most comfortable in?

I love all characters and archetypes but I have the most fun when I’m making people laugh.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

My play Sabotage will be on at the Motley Bauhaus from the 2nd until the 6th of December. The project is a complete labour of love and has so much talent behind it all. If you like Depeche Mode, nostalgia and beautiful love affairs come see Sabotage.

Where can patrons purchase tickets to this production?
